In May 2026, the UNICart Oulu programme welcomed students, researchers and experts from across Europe to Oulu to explore how artistic and participatory methods can help us better understand and shape urban transformation. Through the UNIC alliance, participants explored Meri-Toppila and AaltoSiilo while reimagining the future of post-industrial cities.

The programme showcased the power of international collaboration, bringing together talent from six European universities to learn, create and make an impact beyond campus walls. Together, we’re building more inclusive, creative and sustainable urban futures.

AaltoSiilo is a former industrial silo in Meri-Toppila and one of the last industrial buildings designed by Alvar Aalto. As a flagship project of Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture, it is being transformed into an international hub for culture, learning and community engagement, while preserving Oulu’s industrial heritage. The site also serves as a platform for collaboration between the City of Oulu, local communities and universities, including the University of Oulu.

Oulu 2026 European Capital of Culture year was also introduced to students and participants in more detail by Ulla Pirkola from Oulu Culture Foundation.

Oulu is the European Capital of Culture in 2026. 🎉🎸

The title of European Capital of Culture is awarded by the European Union to celebrate cultural diversity, strengthen connections across Europe, and showcase the unique strengths of each host city.

But Oulu2026 is about more than events. Its ambition is to create a lasting "Cultural Climate Change" - bringing people together, inspiring new ideas, and making culture a bigger part of everyday life across Oulu and Northern Finland. Oulu welcomes visitors and communities to experience a year filled with art, culture, creativity and new encounters.

From spectacular festivals and public art to community gatherings, music, science, food and creativity, Oulu2026 invites everyone to be part of something bigger.

The University of Oulu collaborates with the Oulu 2026 by organising diverse and immersive culture programme highligting culture of the University community. Oulu 2026 creates new opportunities for culture, science and community to meet throughout the year.

Stay tuned this week in UNIC Social media channels and learn more about Oulu2026 year!

What if an art museum could be more than a place to display art?

Last week, participants in the UNIC International Sustainability Leadership Autumn School took on a challenge set by the City of Malmö: reimagining the future Malmö Art Museum and its role in the city.

Using co-creation methods, master's and doctoral students from across Europe explored six questions about the museum's future: its relationship with the park, its role in public life, heritage and transformation, sustainability, biodiversity, and climate transition.

Their ideas challenged traditional notions of what a museum can be.

💡 A place that extends beyond its walls and into the park.
💡 A welcoming "third space" where people can gather, connect and learn.
💡 A meeting point between culture, nature and urban life.
💡 A platform for engaging citizens with sustainability and climate challenges through art and interaction.

One of the strongest takeaways from the workshop was the value of bringing together different perspectives. Students from different disciplines worked alongside city representatives to explore real-world challenges, demonstrating how collaboration between cities and universities can generate fresh ideas and mutual learning.

A big thank you to Joel Veborg, colleagues at Malmö University
@malmouniversitet @studyinmalmo and representatives from the City of Malmö @malmocity @malmo_stad_officiell and Malmö Art Museum @malmokonstmuseum for creating a space where creativity, critical thinking and co-creation could thrive.

The future museum is not just a building. It's a space for culture, community, dialogue and urban transformation. ✨ by @unic_eu
