Today, January 28th, ICE and Border Patrol raided almost 20 different LA communities, kidnapping and brutalizing people in record numbers.Several people were taken in Boyle Heights, leaving the people distressed. ESPAÑOL EN LOS COMENTARIOSJoin us on Saturday, July 18, 2-4 PM at the @latu_ktown space on 8th St. for an exhibition and fundraising event in solidarity with the people of Venezuela. We will be collecting money to support Union Comunera and La Minka, both active comunas (organized communes) and friends of LATU who are currently responding to the damage caused by the back-to-back devastating earthquakes on June 24thArtist Rome Arrieche’s exhibition, “Chamba,” is a series of photos that document the everyday labor of Venezuelan people. First presented locally in Boyle Heights earlier this year by LATU’s Eastside local @uniondevecinos, we return to Arrieche’s work in the aftermath of the earthquakes. The artist will join us live via Zoom from Venezuela to report on the current situation and how the comunas are responding on the ground. On June 24th, two earthquakes struck Venezuela. The human impacts of brutal economic sanctions and the frozen assets held by the United States have made this natural disaster into something much worse. Hundreds have died, thousands are injured, and many more are missing. The death toll continues to rise as heavy machinery has been delayed in entering the country. Meanwhile people organized together at the neighborhood level in comunas, volunteers, and people in solidarity from across the country have mobilized to support recovery efforts. Union de Vecinos, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, and the Los Angeles Tenant Union have a long history organizing and responding to crises. We stand in solidarity with the Venezuelan people as their organized rapid response networks confront the challenges produced by these disastrous earthquakes and US manufactured crises. Our goal is to raise funds that will go directly to the Venezuelan people in the comunas, who are organized at a local level, empowering them to purchase what they need most for both short-term relief and long-term recovery. This support will help families locate loved ones, grieve losses, survive the upcoming weeks, and begin to rebuild their communities.All proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly to comunas in Caracas and La Guaira. We demand strong protections against evictions- including those under Ellis Act.Finally, we demand that properties by turned over to tenants! We have every interests of maintaining our homes up to code and creating a harassment-free zone! Hace dos semanas, el controlador de la ciudad, Kennet Mejía, publicó un informe de las “100 propiedades de alquiler más problemáticas” de Los Ángeles. @uniondevecinos se ha estado organizando en Wyvernwood Garden Apartments, clasificado en el puesto número 5 de la lista, durante los últimos 3 años. Ayer, inquilinos organizados de Wyvernwood (conocidos como comité UVA), junto con inquilinos de todo @latenants, lanzaron una fuerte ofensa contra el Departamento de Vivienda de Los Ángeles para denunciar su papel activo en mantener a los inquilinos en condiciones de vivienda pésimas y ayudar en desalojos ilegales y reducción de servicios ,al no hacer su trabajo y hacer cumplir los derechos de los inquilinos y los códigos de vivienda de habitabilidad.Exigimos una auditoría completa del LAHD y de todo el personal que cierra casos sin una investigación y resolución completas de las violaciones del código y de la RSO. Exigimos SANCIONES para los propietarios: legales y penales. Exigimos una reunión urgente con LAHD para abordar todos los problemas en Wyvernwood. Less than 2 weeks ago, lacontroller Kenneth Mejia, released a report of LA’s “Top 100 most problemantic rental properties. @uniondevecinos has been organizing at Wyvernwood Garden Apartments, ranked #5 on the list, for the past 3 years. Yesterday, organized tenants from Wyvernwood (known as UVA) along with tenants across the city from LATU, launched a strong offense against Los Angeles Housing Department to denounce their active role in keeping tenants in slumlord living conditions, aiding in the ongoing reduction of services and assisting in illegal evictions by not doing their job and enforcing tenants rights and standard habitability housing codes. This report only confirms what tenants all over the city have been shouting for decades! We are ignored, we are turned away- there are no city agencies, representatives or government body that truly represents the interest of working class tenants 😡😡 this is why we organize in 15 locals across the city to ourganize our collective rage and collective love for our homes and neighborhoods to transform Los Angeles in OIR IMAGE!
