Mad thank you to collectives like @antipodearchive and so many others who’re out there documenting scenes across the world OUTSIDE the typical Western ones.

One band that grabbed my attention is TAARRUZ out of Turkey - and not only cause I just went to Istanbul for the first time this past summer and fucking fell in LOVE with that city…

Just a dope band with a strong message out there in scenes with little media attention doing their shit.

RESPECT.

Regardless of how shit the world seems to be…we keep trucking on.

Today’s post is dedicated to the Malaysian scene…I had the pleasure to travel and start performing Malaysia pretty much every year since 2003 with my old band KING LY CHEE. The Malaysian scene taught me about community WHILE churning out insanely talented bands that could easily rival bands coming out in the West. Back then, we were blown away by bands like Second Combat, Cassandra, and so many others, but hands down, what was amazing to me was how, in a beautifully Muslim-heavy country like Malaysia, they were able to seamlessly blend hardcore into their lives. Women with hijabs on singing their hearts out, stopping shows for Asr or Maghrib prayers; I was even there for a skateboarding competition, and everyone stopped for the Azan call. As a Muslim…it was amazing to see all of this.

Since then…I’ve always loved Malaysia.

Today I’ve got posts by metallic hardcore bands like PRESSURESIDE, crust band RUGH, oi band THE AGGRESSION, and UK hardcore band AGENCY featuring Malaysian vocalist Alex. All of this just to give you a TINY taste of the quality of music that proudly comes out of that country…ALL POSTS UP ON UNITEASIA.ORG

All good - no need to worry.

About three weeks ago a car smashed into me while I was on a lime bike. The driver didn’t heed the road markings and T boned me hitting me with such force that I flipped over the bike and landed on the floor and fractured a bone in my lower back. That’s why Mashaal had to cancel the Bristol and Brighton shows…huge thank you to @burningwaterbn1 and @blowoutnights for their understanding and to any bands that stepped in to cover for us.

A lovely random hijabi lady called emergency services and stayed with me for the two hours I was stuck on the street unable to move. They sent a police van and an ambulance. They put IVs into me on the street because my blood pressure had dropped and I couldn’t really speak. They made the decision to call a HEMS team who flew in on a helicopter. I eventually didn’t need to be airlifted thank goodness. Once inside the ambulance they used an ultra sound type contraption to check my insides and confirmed thankfully that I didn’t have any internal bleeding. Alhamdulilah. The entire time - the far right fucks got in my head. To all personnel who were helping me with so much kindness I kept saying, ā€œHey I’m so sorry. I’m a new immigrant here and I apologize for causing you all so much troubleā€. They of course told me not to worry and that they were doing their jobs. Not to mention - I PAY TAXES.

Anyway, after CT scans at the hospital, etc, it turns out I had a fractured bone in my lower back that they promised would eventually heal on its own. Later that night I walked out of that hospital still reeling from this entire crazy experience…there is an ongoing police investigation. Inshallah it’ll all work out…

MASHAAL has a show next Saturday and I’m pretty worried about my back but for my own mental health I NEED to play this show, even if I’m just standing there. If you’re coming, please help with singing along, stage diving and going CRAZY. I will try my best to reciprocate but please understand if I can’t.

Alhamdulilah…it could’ve been so much worse. God was watching over me…

Will always be my honor to use my little platform to promote bands, artists, creatives from marginalized communities. Today I have two new posts up on UNITE ASIA which you all gotta read up on.

uniteasia.org

The first is incredible UK-based hardcore punk band NEKRA who were kind enough to give me a full track by track breakdown of their new record ā€˜Is This Really Living’ out on @lavidaesunmus . Go read up on it, get the record, and if you’re in London - see you at their record release show. (Photo credit - @robin_silas

The second band is PARESTHESIA who’ve just released their debut EP. The band features a vocalist who is half Thai which, if you know anything about UNITE ASIA, is a country I’ve been performing in with my old band KING LY CHEE from way back in 2003 and is home to amazing bands like MONUMENT X, THE SHREDDER, TEN BAHT PER HOUR, BRAND NEW SUNSET, and WHISPERS, amongst so many more.
@paresthesiaband

Mad respect to fellow POCs and members of other marginalized communities out here in the UK and other predominantly white spaces doing their thing and making our presence felt. Bands like @shootingdaggers_hc @themenstrualcramps @sarsourhardcore @ikhrasactivity @unwitnessedviolence @rats.breath @grailguardofficial @sourflake @humandeceithc @resistghc @secondskin.hc @shunkaicrust @misgendered.hc @witherhorde and so many others…am so proud to include my own bands @mashaalhardcore and @kingstreetlbu to that list. by @uniteasia

ā€œOpen the extended family
The family is growing fast
Friendship will transcend the borders
The world is shrinking fastā€

Back in 2013, a dude from Hong Kong suddenly found himself living a dream that he never imagined would EVER happen…EVER.Ā As mentioned in my last post, 2013 was a big year as I put on a show for my heroes in my hometown, Hong Kong, for their first ever time. Read that full post…

In the post, I forgot to mention that after putting on that show, somehow I finagled my way into joining them for one week as they toured Europe that summer. I couldn’t believe they said yes…Lou and Pete were the two who immediately were on board: ā€œOf course you can! We travel on a bus and have like 18 bunks on the top deck. You can just take one of those!ā€ That entire week was like heaven to me…touring with my heroes whom I had JUST met on a deeply personal level a few months prior. And now I was with them every single day. The first day was Hellfest in France. They played in front of 10,000 people at like 1:00 am after Anti Flag, and proceeded to LEVEL the entire place. Literally a master class on how this shit is done. It was unbelievable…it was also unbelievable that I got to witness so much behind-the-scenes action to see what they were like off stage etc. Like, there was apparently a part they messed up in ā€˜Machete’ and it was SO cool to hear them talk about it backstage!!! I remember thinking to myself, ā€œDude, they’re just like the rest of us!ā€ hahahaha…

There’s so much I can talk about that week of all weeks…it’s been 13 years and I still remember everything.Ā

On that trip, they asked me if I wanted to sing ā€˜Ratpack’. The smile that stretched on my face I felt might have broken my damn face altogether. Here’s a video of me singing it on the very last day of that tour. I love how Pete looks down at his set list and sees Ratpack is next, and he looks over at me and smiles. Class act of a band…listening back now to how Lou introduced me to thousands of people at that fest has left me in tears (again). Just more proof of how much he loved hardcore and how much he cared for his friends.

RIP LOU.Ā

Sick of it All is the reason I’ve been involved in hardcore for the past 30-plus years. The first time I saw them was December 15, 1994, and ever since that day, I wanted to know more about this thing called hardcore. Their lyrics basically informed me about the world and how to use lyric-writing as a way to process the ā€œquagmireā€ that is life. When I was living in the US, ANY time I could watch SOIA, I was there. Every. Single. Time.

Fast forward to 2013, and I was already back in Hong Kong since 1999 pushing hardcore hard - with my own band King Ly Chee, putting on shows, releasing a bilingual zine, and I got a message one day that SOIA wanted to play in Hong Kong. I couldn’t believe it…I put on SOIA’s first-ever show in Hong Kong. I remember going to the airport to pick them up, nervous AS FUCK and just hoping and praying that they were cool. Thank god…they were. Not only did I put on their show, I actually became friends with the whole band. They were all great people…but there’s something super wholesome, kind, considerate about Lou that I just can’t explain. He genuinely cares about the people around him, and would often message me about big things coming up in my life.

Later on that same year, SOIA allowed me to come and join them for a week on their bus on their annual European tours. It was unbelievable… Later that year, Lou sang on my band, King Ly Chee’s, song called Lost in a World. A song about looking for belonging, and how hardcore helped me find it. The band that helped me find hardcore was now on a song I wrote about finding hardcore. Wild. Then SOIA let my band join them on an Asian tour that I booked for them. On that trip, somehow it was brought up that King Ly Chee should come out to the US to do their 30th anniversary US dates. So we did.

My love, admiration, and dedication for SOIA runs deep in my soul. As mentioned above, the way I approach hardcore is because of SOIA. Again, I wouldn’t be involved in hardcore today if it wasn’t for them.

My immense love and gratitude to the members of SOIA, to Melissa and Aurelia. I am so sorry for your loss…

Lou - may you rest well now, my friend. by @uniteasia

We’re all busy just trying to live amongst the deluge of some of the worst information that consumes our existence on the daily. Amongst all of this, it’s hard to think that anything we do in hardcore or punk has any impact whatsoever - it just seems like such a narcissistic exercise. BUT, one thing that it does do, as I put these posts together earlier this morning, is that it gives us a reprieve, a break for our mental health.

Thank you to anyone that continues to support the website UNITEASIA.ORG that I’ve been running 11 plus years now.

Here are some new posts on the site that you could all check out…

Dispatches from Asian American Unity Fest, Year Two by Olivia West [Part 2]
@asianamericanunityfest @cutepotatofarmer

Part two of this gorgeous article that speaks to me on so many levels is up now…huge thank you to Olivia for basically putting into words things that I have been feeling my entire life as a marginalised person in basically every community I’ve embedded myself in (in the US; back in Hong Kong, and now in the UK).

Here in London, we’re making so many little dents to this situation…that’s why it’s so great to read how almost the exact same situation is being rectified out there in the US.

For those of us out here in the UK, this whole article is a super profound read.

As always, read the FULL thing up on UNITE ASIA. by @uniteasia
