The former Half Price Books building in Downtown Berkeley is getting ready for its next creative chapter.

@zeroemptyspaces is coming to #DowntownBerkeley in partnership with @visitberkeley + @downtownberkeley, with support from @cityofberkeley, Mayor @mayoradenaishii, Councilmember Igor Tregub, and Gordon Commercial Real Estate Services.

We’re working to transform the currently vacant space at 2036 Shattuck Ave. into affordable working artist studios, creating new opportunities for local creatives while bringing fresh energy, foot traffic, visibility, and cultural activity back into the heart of Downtown Berkeley.

Join us for an Open House Preview + Information Session for Artists before the studios open to the public.

Saturday, August 8, 2026
11 AM to 12 PM
Former Half Price Books
2036 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley, CA 94704

We’ll walk through studio pricing, access, the application process, move-in timeline, and the larger vision for building a vibrant creative community in Downtown Berkeley.

This is more than an artist studio opportunity. It is vacancy activation in action.

Artists get affordable dedicated space to create, connect, sell, and be seen. Downtown gets more daily creative energy. Property owners get positive activity and visibility. The community gets to experience creativity in a space that would otherwise be sitting dark.

Berkeley artists, Bay Area creatives, arts supporters, neighbors, and community partners, this is the moment to learn more, RSVP, and help shape what comes next.

Reposted from @civicleadersummit: The solution to vacant storefronts isn't waiting for the right tenant, but creating opportunities for artists, entrepreneurs, and community builders right now.

At the #2026CivicLeaderSummit, Evan Snow, Co-Founder of #ZeroEmptySpaces, will share how his team has transformed 34 vacant commercial spaces across five states into thriving creative hubs that support more than 900 artists while bringing new energy and economic activity to surrounding communities.

In this interactive masterclass, you'll learn practical strategies for activating underutilized spaces, engaging property owners and stakeholders, and turning vacancy into a catalyst for creativity, entrepreneurship, and civic life. Attendees will even have the opportunity to submit real local challenges for a live case-study discussion during the session.

If you're looking for actionable ways to strengthen downtowns and breathe new life into empty spaces, you won't want to miss this conversation.

At this month’s CreativeZen Talks, Vicki Rosenthal @vickirosenthal.art reminded us that creativity is not just about what we make. It is about how we show up, how we see one another, and how we use our gifts in service of a more compassionate and connected world.

As part of our 8 year anniversary gathering, Vicki shared how her art, including the shoes she created in reference to human rights issues, women’s rights, trans rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and immigration, became a powerful form of visual storytelling, empathy, advocacy, and human connection.

One of the biggest takeaways from her talk was the reminder that we never fully know what someone else is carrying. Sometimes simply seeing someone, acknowledging them, and treating them with dignity can create a moment of connection that matters more than we realize.

We are deeply grateful to Vicki for helping us mark this CreativeZen milestone and for continuing to be such a meaningful human being in our creative community.

The full talk is now available on our Choose954 YouTube page.

CreativeZen Talks will be taking July off, but we’ll be back in August at Zero Empty Spaces inside DCOTA for another morning of meditation, storytelling, connection, and community.

There’s nothing like seeing the impact in person.

We love welcoming industry partners, collaborators, and creative thinkers into our Zero Empty Spaces locations because the story becomes much more tangible when you can actually walk the space, meet the artists, see the studios, and feel the energy that is created when vacant commercial space is brought back to life.

Great spending time with Lyn Falk of @RetailworksInc at our location inside the Design Center of the Americas (DCOTA) @dcotadesign and continuing the conversation around how Zero Empty Spaces can support her clients, state-level Main Street coordinating partners, downtown districts, economic development organizations, and property owners looking for practical ways to move from vacancy strategy into real activation.

We are especially excited about the potential to collaborate around Main Street revitalization, retail incubation, storefront activation, modular space division, emerging maker and brand support, and other creative placemaking models that help communities turn underutilized real estate into visible momentum.

There is only so much you can understand from a website, article, deck, or case study. When people tour one of our spaces in person, they start to see what is actually possible: affordable studios, active storefronts, local artists, community programming, increased foot traffic, stronger place identity, and a more compelling story for the property and surrounding district.

If you are a property owner, developer, downtown district, Main Street organization, CRA, BID, chamber, economic development partner, or civic leader trying to figure out what to do with vacant or underused commercial space, we’d be glad to show you what this looks like in real life.

The best way to understand Zero Empty Spaces is to step inside one. taken in DCOTA | Design Center of the Americas by @uniteusgroup

A dedicated space changes everything.

In this clip from Episode 80 of the @zeroemptyspaces Podcast, @bymissbello shares why having an affordable artist studio at @dcotadesign has impacted her confidence, consistency, visibility, and growth.

For Miss Bello, the studio is more than a place to make work. It is a place where her brain knows it is time to create. A place where one focused hour can become more productive. A place where her art can live, be seen, and connect with people even when she is not physically there.

That is the heart of Zero Empty Spaces.

Affordable studios. 24 hour artist access. No commission on sales. A growing creative community. A place to create, collaborate, be discovered, and build something real outside of your home.

As Miss Bello says, being surrounded by other artists gives you the feeling that the world can be a better place. And inside Zero Empty Spaces, that feeling becomes a reality.

Come experience it in person during Open Studios at our newest expanded Zero Empty Spaces location at @dcotadesign in Dania Beach, featuring 40 artist studios, including a few remaining studio opportunities still available.

Open Studios take place every 3rd Friday from 4 to 7 PM.

In Episode 80 of the #ZeroEmptySpacesPodcast, we sit down with Andrea Bello, professionally known as Miss Bello, at Zero Empty Spaces at the DCOTA | Design Center of the Americas in Dania Beach.

Miss Bello is a creative visionary, designer, and space transformer whose work brings together bold color, intentional design, digital art, layered surfaces, backlit displays, murals, and immersive installations.

What makes her work so powerful is that it does more than fill a wall. It changes the energy of a room. It helps brands, designers, businesses, and communities tell stronger visual stories through color, scale, emotion, and intention.

This conversation is about art, design, confidence, abundance, and the way creative environments can completely shift how people feel when they walk into a space.

We’re proud to have Miss Bello as part of our Zero Empty Spaces artist community at Design Center of the Americas, and excited to share her story through Episode 80.

We also invite the community to join us for Open Studios every 3rd Friday from 4 to 7 PM at our newest expanded Zero Empty Spaces location at Design Center of the Americas in Dania Beach, now home to 40 working artist studios, with a few studios still available.

Come meet the artists, explore the studios, experience the work, and see firsthand how creativity can bring new life to underutilized spaces.

Art has the power to bring us back to joy, movement, memory, and the simple daily moments we sometimes forget.

In Episode 79 of the #ZeroEmptySpacesPodcast, we sat down with @vanesamiori inside our newest expanded Zero Empty Spaces location at DCOTA in Dania Beach, now home to 40 working artist studios.

Vanesa shared how her work is guided by truth, beauty, joy, and curiosity, and how powerful it is when someone feels that joy coming through her paintings. One of the most moving stories she shared was about a gentleman in a wheelchair who connected with one of her swimming paintings because it brought him back to the feeling of being young, free, and in the water again.

That’s what art does.

It brings back memories.
It sparks movement.
It reminds us of joy.
It reconnects us with the simple daily things that are so easy to forget.

Come meet Vanesa and the artists creating inside our newest expanded Zero Empty Spaces location during Open Studios every 3rd Friday from 4 to 7pm at DCOTA in Dania Beach.

With 40 studios, this space is quickly becoming one of South Florida’s most exciting creative hubs, and there are still a few studios available for local artists looking for an affordable place to create, collaborate, and be discovered outside of their home.

“The way to equality is to be present.”

Three years ago, @cityoffortlauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis @mayordeanftl joined us for CreativeZen Talks and shared a powerful reminder that being present, aware, and engaged is how we help maintain the dignity of who we are as a community.

He spoke about the importance of showing up, not just for your own causes, but for other people’s events, other people’s stories, and the spaces where community is being built in real time.

That has always been the heart of @creativezen_talks.

For the past 8 years, we’ve created a free monthly space for people to gather, listen, reflect, connect, and leave with the story, insight, or “aha moment” they may have needed that day.

This Friday, June 12, 2026, we’re celebrating CreativeZen Talks’ 8 year anniversary with Vicki Rosenthal, MSW of @vickirosenthal.art, an artist, educator, advocate, and artivist whose work reflects creativity, kindness, justice, and the power of showing up for the world we want to live in.

Join us at @zeroemptyspaces inside @dcotadesign for a morning of coffee, connection, guided meditation, inspiration, and community.

Doors open at 8:30 AM.
Talk begins promptly at 9:00 AM.

CreativeZen Talks is free and open to the community.

Being creative is not required. Being inspired is guaranteed.

This is what @creativezen_talks feels like before the talk even begins.

Coffee brewing.
People connecting.
New faces becoming familiar ones.
Artists, creatives, entrepreneurs, community builders, and curious humans showing up with an open mind and leaving with something they didn’t know they needed.

For the past 8 years, CreativeZen Talks has created a free monthly space for our community to gather on the second Friday morning of each month for connection, guided meditation, reflection, inspiration, and a thought-provoking story from someone local doing meaningful work.

The best part is you never know who you’re going to meet, what you’re going to hear, or what “aha moment” might find you in the room.
