“The Hip-Hop Orchestra Experience” @miknawooj, led by Korean-born composer JooWan Kim, brings hip-hop into conversation with Mozart, Beethoven and Bach. Performed by a 28-piece ensemble, blending beats, movement and classical form in unexpected ways.

Today, on what would have been Betye Saar’s birthday, I’m remembering one of the most influential artists of our time.

Betye changed the course of American art. Through her groundbreaking assemblages, she transformed everyday objects into powerful reflections on history, memory, and the Black experience. Her work continues to inspire artists, scholars, and audiences around the world, and her legacy will endure for generations.

This photograph was taken at my grandmother Dr. Samella Lewis’s memorial in 2023 with Betye, her daughter Alison Saar, and me. My grandmother and Betye shared a friendship that spanned decades, and Dr. Lewis documented and championed Betye’s work in the landmark publication Black Artists on Art, one of the earliest major books dedicated to the work and voices of Black artists.

I feel fortunate to have crossed paths with this extraordinary artist. Thank you, Betye, for your vision, your generosity, and the extraordinary legacy you leave behind.

Happy Heavenly Birthday. Rest in power. ❤️🕊️
