I waited to get Molly Crabapple’s timely history of the Jewish Labor Bund from a local, independent seller (Inquiring Minds in Saugerties, NY).

Anyone interested in the intersection of art, activism and social change movements should read it because the history, legacy, and ethos of the Bund is integrated into much of the great Jewish countercultural writing, activism, poetry and music that the world knows.

The Bund and the philosophical tensions between its state-orientation and internationalist socialist ideas, came up regularly in my conversations with Allen Ginsberg, Howard Zinn, Tuli Kupferberg, Judith Malina, as well as Pete Seeger, Izzy Young, Si Kahn and others. The Bund’s place in Jewish radical thought came to life walking the streets of the Lower East Side with Tuli, Allen or my friend, the illustrator, Eric Drooker, where strolls would invariably divert into anecdotes about people and places related to the Bund, anarchist, socialist, communist, people’s movements that would then be brought back into present day context of a world on the edge of collapse as we contemplated how to change it: The old Yiddish theaters on 2nd Avenue, the Marx Brothers, Emma Goldman’s home on 13th Street, communes like Three Arrows up the Hudson - and throughout it all – an outspoken understanding that Zionism was an abomination akin to Nazism and pogroms themselves.

When you pick up Ginsberg or Zinn, or take in the poetry and songs from the Beats to the folk revival – the Bund is woven into that history, part of the greater grundlage that informed and continues to inform all of us working to make a better world. 🌊 Despite the difficult reality in Gaza, we are still singing.

Today, we sang, swam, laughed, and spent precious time with our friends and our children's friends. It was a beautiful day because we choose to hold on to life, even in the middle of pain.

We keep searching for small moments of joy, simple smiles, and songs that remind us hope is still alive. 💙

For hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza, the sea is the only place to breathe, to escape the weight of war for a little while, and to feel a sense of peace again.

We pray for better days. Until then, we will keep singing, smiling, and choosing hope.

🌊 رغم كل الظروف الصعبة في غزة... ما زلنا نغني.

اليوم غنّينا، سبحنا، وضحكنا مع شبابنا وأصدقاء أولادنا. كان يوماً جميلاً، لأننا نؤمن أن الحياة تستحق أن تُعاش، حتى وسط كل هذا الألم.

نحاول أن نتمسك بكل لحظة فرح، وكل ابتسامة، وكل أغنية تمنحنا الأمل. 💙

البحر هو المتنفس الوحيد لمئات آلاف العائلات في غزة، المكان الذي نهرب إليه قليلاً من ثقل الحرب، لنستعيد شيئاً من السلام داخلنا.
