Driven by the robust execution of its 2024–2029 Strategic Plan, the University of Ghana has surged 114 places in the newly released Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027.

The ranking, released on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, places UG in the 801–1000 global band among 2,297 ranked universities worldwide.

Communicating the 2027 rankings outcome to the University, Times Higher Education confirmed UG’s position as the No. 1 ranked university in Ghana, noting that the University had “made a powerful move in the World University Rankings, rising into the 801–1000 band” among 2,297 ranked institutions worldwide. “Even more compelling, [UG’s] actual rank advanced by 114 places,” THE noted.

Reacting to the news, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, described the recognition by Times Higher Education as particularly gratifying, noting that UG is already ranked No. 1 in Ghana in the QS World University Rankings and several other major global rankings.

“This top position in the THE rankings is a significant achievement. It affirms our sustained leadership in higher education across Ghana, West Africa and the African continent,” she said.

Leadership must translate into institutional impact. This formed the core of discussions at the latest edition of the Legon Leadership Academy (LLA) workshop at the University of Ghana.

The LLA is a deliberate platform for grooming and developing leaders with the knowledge, competencies and values needed to inspire others, manage change and advance institutional goals.

Opening the fifth workshop, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, urged participants to see themselves as ambassadors of the Academy and to apply the knowledge and skills gained to contribute meaningfully to the development of their respective institutions. She stressed that leadership extends beyond formal positions of authority and requires values and practices that enable individuals to drive positive change.

The workshop features modules on Higher Education Institutions, UG Management Structure, and Research Leadership and Management. The sessions are facilitated by experts from the University of Ghana and other institutions.

In preparation for the commemoration of the University of Ghana’s 80th anniversary in 2028, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has inaugurated three committees to oversee key aspects of the milestone celebration.

The committees are the Scientific Committee to Oversee the University of Ghana History Project, the 80th Anniversary History Project Research and Writing Team, and the 80th Anniversary Celebration Planning Committee.

In her remarks, Prof. Amfo emphasised that the 80th anniversary should celebrate the University’s rich history while strengthening a sense of belonging, reconnecting generations and showcasing the institution’s future. She urged the committees to make the anniversary enjoyable, inclusive and impactful, while ensuring that the University’s history is presented in a scholarly yet accessible manner.

The Chairs of the three committees, Emeritus Prof. Clifford Nii Boi Tagoe, Chair of the Scientific Committee to Oversee the UG History Project; Dr Nana Yaw Boampong Sapong, Chair of the 80th Anniversary History Project Research and Writing Team; and Prof. Clement Appah, Chair of the 80th Anniversary Celebration Planning Committee, accepted the assignment and pledged to work closely together to deliver on the expectations outlined in their Terms of Reference.

After eight thought-provoking Inaugural Lectures spanning diverse disciplines, Prof. Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua delivered the University’s 9th and final Inaugural Lecture for the 2025/2026 academic year.

The lecture, which drew participation from members of the University community and beyond, was anchored on the need to reclaim students’ academic freedom as a critical part of democratic development in Africa. Prof. Appiagyei-Atua advanced this argument through a critical examination of Africa’s intellectual heritage, colonialism, university governance, student participation and the structures that shape academic freedom within universities.

He further challenged the conventional view that places the State at the centre of threats to academic freedom, arguing for greater attention to the internal structures, relationships and practices within universities themselves.
