In 2016, Louisville was awarded the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Prize, which honors communities that are addressing structural racism and advancing health, opportunity, and equity for all.

That work continues today through several organizations, including the @cflouisville, the @Louisvilparksalliancelou, and (Un)Known Project. We have launched new funding models to support under-resourced communities, expanded access to public spaces to support health and wellbeing, and created new ways of understanding and honoring the history of Black people.

Everyone has a role to play when it comes to advancing racial equity. Find your role 🔗 in bio!

We’re excited to share a first look at the renderings for the (Un)Known Project Sculpture Park - a vision that is moving closer to reality thanks to the investment and support of many of you!

Along Louisville’s Ohio River, this sacred space is being created to honor the names and stories of enslaved Black people, hold space for reflection and remembrance, and invite each of us to consider our responsibility to the histories we inherit and the future we help shape.

The Sculpture Park builds upon the permanent installations already present at the site, including On the Banks of Freedom and In Our Elders’ Footprints. Later this year, we look forward to unveiling a new America 250 installation by artist Ellex Swavoni, adding another chapter to the stories held within this landscape.

The renderings offer a glimpse of what the completed park can become: a welcoming public space where art, history, landscape, and community come together. With new sculptures, pathways, seating, signage, trees, and other improvements, we anticipate completing the Sculpture Park in 2027.

We are all stewards of this space.

As we enter the final stages of bringing the Sculpture Park to fruition, we invite you to be part of its completion. Your investment will help transform these renderings into a permanent public space for remembrance, learning, reflection, and connection.

Today during @otheringandbelonging conference, @profjohnapowell talked about how we have to work at three levels - global, national and local. “What’s at stake is human life as we know it,” he said during his conversation with @sadiqanoni. More from their timely and necessary conversation to come!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Louisville to Liberty: The Blackburns’ Journey at the @frazierhistorymuseum as we honored the extraordinary story of freedom seekers Lucie and Thornton Blackburn.

About the exhibit: In the afternoon of July 3, 1831, Thornton and Lucie Blackburn made a daring escape from their enslavers in Louisville, Kentucky, eventually making it to Toronto, Canada. Their story was nearly forgotten until archaeologists discovered their home while working in a school yard. Site director Dr. Karolyn Smardz Frost spent more than 20 years piecing together Thornton and Lucie’s story. From her research, Dr. Smardz Frost wrote I’ve Got a Home in Glory Land: A Lost Tale of the Underground Railroad. It is the first birth to death biography of a freedom-seeking couple published since the Civil War.

In Louisville to Liberty: The Blackburns’ Journey, visitors will learn more about Thornton and Lucie Blackburn and their journey to freedom. For the first time ever displayed in the United States, the exhibition will include objects belonging to Thornton and Lucie that were uncovered in the archaeological excavation. It was necessary for Thornton and Lucie to leave Louisville to escape bondage. Louisville to Liberty: The Blackburns’ Journey welcomes their story back to Kentucky.

The event featured a presentation by Dr. Karolyn Smardz Frost, and panel discussion facilitated by Rachel Platt of the Frazier with Lamont Collins of @roots101aam and (Un)Known Project co-founders @hannahdrake628 and @joshmillerventures.

We invite you to keep learning, asking questions, sharing their story, and uncovering the histories that surround us. These stories live on when we choose to carry them forward.

The exhibit featuring artifacts from where Lucie and Thornton lived in Canada, travel reflections from our journey to Toronto, and more, will be on display at the Frazier through July 4, 2027.

Thanks to @21clouisville and @_ashleyrowland for inviting us into the galleries for a We The People Anthology reading, discussion and book signing as part of @falloffreedom 📕

With readings from Dionne Griffiths, @beth.bcba and @professormarcmurphy, and discussion moderated by We The People co-editor @joshmillerventures, we loved hearing how the contributors approached their pieces and the topic, and questions and feedback from the audience!

We’ll share some video clips soon ✨ by @unknownprojecttrail
