Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Kayla Weinman @weinman_ceramics
is joining us from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln @unl_clay for a special studio residency for 2 weeks!

Kayla is one of two talented visiting graduate artists joining us at UIowa Ceramics this semester through CIRCA (Consortium for Intercollegiate Research in the Ceramic Arts). Through this exciting exchange network among major research institutions, two of our own graduate students have traveled out to partner programs, while we have the pleasure of hosting two visiting artists here in Iowa City.

Building expanded cohorts, sharing resources, and connecting creative communities across universities is at the very heart of CIRCA—and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have this creative energy in our studios!

Kayla’s compelling work investigates the history of clowning, humor, and social anxiety through vibrant, wearable ceramic objects and performative attire. Combining meticulous hand-building techniques with exaggerated scale and color, her work thoughtfully examines the tension between outward performance and internal vulnerability.

Stay tuned for more updates from her time in the studio, and please make sure to say hello when you see her around! 👋

Welcome to Iowa, Kayla! 🌽💛🖤 taken in University of Iowa, Visual Arts Building by @unl_clay

Last, but certainly not least is our second post-baccalaureate student Audry Barnes. Give Audry a follow to see what happens in her year at UNL @artbyaudry or at audrybarnes.com

“Audry Barnes was born and raised on her family’s small midwestern farm in Atchison County, KS. She received her BFA in Ceramics with a minor in Art History in May of 2026 from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. With reflection of her formative years accompanied by object experience, Audrys work emerges in a multidisciplinary intersection of ceramics, poetry and painting. In summer of 2025 she was selected for the Chautauqua School of Art six week Residency Program in Chautauqua, New York. Following her residency, she returned to Chautauqua this summer as a teaching artist and studio technician. Her work has been included in the collections of The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Arts and exhibited nationally throughout the northeast and midwest. She currently resides in Lincoln, NE as a Post Bachelors student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.”

The UNL Clay family got extremely lucky and we also got to welcome two new post baccalaureate students. We would like to first introduce Belsy Trigueros @bels_yyy

“Belsy Trigueros is a ceramic artist originally from Yuma, Arizona. She earned her Associate of
Arts degree from Arizona Western College before completing her Bachelors in Studio Art at
Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. During her undergraduate studies, she developed her practice in ceramics and worked as a ceramics studio technician.

Trigueros primarily works with hand-built ceramics and sculptural forms. Her work draws inspiration from nature, religious imagery, and her Mexican-American background. She exploresthemes of spirituality, duality, and balance through forms and symbolic imagery. Her sculptures often combine female figures with animal forms.

Her Catholic upbringing has influenced her interest in religious symbolism and the spiritual
meaning that objects can hold. She is particularly interested in using recurring symbols, such as
eyes, to explore ideas of protection, awareness, and a higher power.

Trigueros is currently a Post Baccalaureate student in Ceramics at the University of Nebraska–
Lincoln. She is continuing to develop her sculptural practice while exploring the relationship
between cultural influences, spirituality and symbolism.”

Classes have started and this fall semester we are treated with Margaret Bohls’ “Making History” class, a fan favorite amongst the students. Here the students are digging through an archive of vessels for their first project. This class will end with an exhibition of the historical vessels made throughout the semester. The exhibition will be on display in the Eisetrager-Howard Gallery from November 30th-December 4th. More exciting updates right around the corner!
