Despite what was posted previously about coming back in April, we’re going to remain on break for now. The need for Unlikely Hikers is bigger than ever, but the toxic cultural climate and ending of DEI programs by outdoor brands has squashed both funding and already dwindling energy.I’ve never known how to give all that I want to give and also keep my own cup full enough. I deeply hope this is just a reset and to have better news after some more time to reflect on the dream of Unlikely Hikers, what it became and what it can be. I know that more time outside and less on screens can only be a good thing. I wish this for all of us. Making social media content and doing anything that requires being online more feels so counterintuitive. Social media has given so much to me and it has also taken so much from me. All monthly donations via Patreon and our website have been paused for now. My relationship with the natural world is one of the most important parts of my life. The very core of myself depends on this connection for survival. I go outside to remember where I’m truly from, to feel connected to the universe and to my place in things, to remember that my body is made in nature’s image no matter what dominant culture says. Nature is my church, my medicine, my home.After losing vital income from the outdoor industry that funds the very function of Unlikely Hikers as a sustainable outdoor resource for folks of marginalized identities, and knowing that by the end of the year I will be losing nearly the rest of my income as even more brands cut their DEI departments (we did it, Joe!), I just… haven’t wanted anything to do with any of it.There are so many things I’ve accomplished in my work that I am so incredibly proud of. Things that have truly changed things in the outdoor industry, especially for plus-size people. I’ve made brands A LOT OF MONEY with my labor, ingenuity, and the priceless intel of my lived experience as a fat person in a culture that sees body diversity as immoral, unattractive and unworthy of equal rights and equal pay. I know my work hasn’t been for nothing, but goddamn if that isn’t the message I’ve received by the outdoor industry.I obviously know that no one and nothing can take my relationship with the natural world away from me. Only I can give that power away, but I’ve just been too crushed to function within this. And please, don’t get it twisted, I’m not surprised by any of this, but of course I hoped for so much more. I’m processing through a lot of grief.
