The Research and Innovation Showcase on Sept. 25 offered the chance for guests to get a closer look at the expertise and the capabilities at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, to meet some of the people doing this work and to see where the capabilities might intersect with the work being done across Nebraska.

"We believe research and innovation are essential to Nebraska's economic vitality, our cultural enrichment, quality of life and our future, and we know that we cannot do that work alone," said Jen Nelson, Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation.

A new academic paper by Paul Hanson and Matthew Joeckel of the Conservation and Survey Division in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s School of Natural Resources contains a brief phrase — “new linework” — that looks innocuous but carries enormous meaning.

To create a statewide Nebraska surficial geologic map with new, more accurate lines showing alluvial contours and other dimensions, the two undertook a massive set of meticulous scientific work. In coordination with the U.S. Geological Survey, they reconciled a wide-ranging patchwork of cartographic information to produce the first-ever statewide map showing Nebraska’s surficial geology.

The researcher on the right wears glasses, a white button-up shirt, a light-colored sweater vest, and a tie. The monitor displays geological formations, map legends, and reference information. by @unlresearch

🐭 'MOUNTAINEERING MICE' 🐭

A hallmark of Jay Storz’s research is that he isn’t studying these creatures from afar – he is setting up base camps, acclimatizing and traversing to heights that humans can tolerate for only short periods of time.

During his lecture, he detailed these mountaineering efforts, as well as his team’s work to shed light on how animals have evolved the ability to survive where temperatures rarely rise above freezing and the air contains less than half the oxygen available at sea level.

Champions on the court. Stewards of the land.

Nebraska's grasslands are part of who we are. They sustain our cattle industry, support wildlife and shape the communities and traditions we call home.

For generations, ranching families and land managers have cared for these working landscapes. It's a legacy of stewardship worth carrying forward. taken in The Pitzer Ranch by @unlresearch

✨ NITRATE RESEARCH ✨

A University of Nebraska–Lincoln research team has received a three-year, $496,722 National Science Foundation grant to investigate an understudied reservoir of organic nitrogen that may shape groundwater quality long after nitrogen management strategies are in place. A separate five-year, $357,000-plus award from the Nebraska Corn Board will help the researchers evaluate approaches that may proactively reduce nitrate risk before it reaches groundwater.

“Most of the nitrogen down there isn’t nitrate at all,” said Arindam Malakar, assistant research professor at the Nebraska Water Center and the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute, who leads the new project and is part of the School of Natural Resources. “It’s organic nitrogen, locked in forms nobody has been counting. It can break down slowly and may keep making new nitrate long after the fertilizer is gone.”

More than 100 years. More than 2,300 tractors tested. One Nebraska laboratory with a worldwide impact.

Since 1920, the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory on @unlincoln's East Campus has helped shape how agricultural equipment is tested around the world.

Today, the lab continues that legacy through independent equipment testing, emerging technology and hands-on learning opportunities for Nebraska students.

Swipe through for a look at the people and equipment behind more than a century of agricultural innovation. taken in Nebraska Tractor Test Lab by @unlresearch

Researchers at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and other institutions now have access to one of the most advanced platforms available for high-throughput proteomics thanks to a new state-of-the-art mass spectrometry instrument installed in the Nebraska Center for Biotechnology’s Proteomics and Metabolomics Facility.

The new Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Astral mass spectrometer is a high-resolution instrument that delivers exceptional speed, depth, sensitivity and accuracy in protein identification and quantification. The new system significantly enhances the facility’s capacity to analyze proteins through liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS), a technology widely used for protein biomarker discovery and other applications across environmental science, agriculture, food safety, animal health and biomedical research. The instrumentation began operations in June 2026.

United States national security depends on maintaining technological advantage and harnessing the people and expertise required to meet evolving mission needs.

That imperative framed a dialogue among U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer of Nebraska, U.S. Navy Adm. Rich Correll, commander of U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), and University of Nebraska System President Dr. Jeffrey P. Gold during the National Strategic Research Institute (NSRI) Research Showcase on September 8 at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

The dialogue was paired with an exhibition of 15 research displays, where speakers and federal, military, state and university leaders explored NSRI and University of Nebraska research spanning the institute’s research portfolio.
