Last Saturday, the Latiné American Law Student Association (LALSA) hosted its annual Matanza at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, bringing students, faculty, and members of the legal community together to celebrate Hispanic culture and tradition.

The evening featured a mariachi performance by the UNM Mariachi Band and the presentation of the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association’s 1L scholarship to Miriam Reichsfeld. Joachim Marjon and Sheryl Saavedra of the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association presented the scholarship.

Through its annual Matanza, LALSA continues to celebrate cultural traditions while fostering meaningful connections within the UNM Law and New Mexico legal communities.

Thank you to LALSA, the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association, and everyone who helped make this year’s Matanza a memorable evening. by @unmlaw

Professor Samuel Winder and third-year law students Andrew Kessel and Jamison Deese recently returned to campus after representing a client in tribal court through the Southwest Indian Law Clinic.

For Jamison, the experience brought the lessons of law school to life:

“The Southwest Indian Law Clinic is where law school finally clicked for me. Representing real clients turned what I learned in class into actual advocacy and showed me what it means to serve Native communities as a lawyer.”

The UNM School of Law’s clinical program, one of the oldest in the country, gives students the opportunity to put their legal education into practice while serving real clients and communities. The program is consistently recognized as one of the top clinical programs in the nation. by @unmlaw

Patrice H. Kunesh and second-year UNM School of Law student and Cherokee Nation citizen Dillon R. Turman recently published “Sovereignty as Tax Policy: Reshaping Tribal Governance Through Tribal General Welfare Exclusion Act Regulations” with the Brookings Institution.

The article examines how the U.S. Treasury Department’s final Tribal General Welfare Exclusion Act regulations mark a significant shift in federal-Tribal relations by requiring greater federal deference to Tribal sovereignty and Tribal governments’ determinations about how best to serve their citizens. It also considers the regulations’ broader implications for Tribal self-governance, economic development, and the federal government’s trust responsibility. by @unmlaw
