Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Kelsey Milian to our Indigenous Musics from the Americas course at the University of New Mexico! Through the sounds of the Istmo de Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Kelsey invited us to rethink the relationship between popular music, Binnizá (Zapotec) identities, and Indigenous futures, reminding us that tradition is not static but continually reimagined through musical creativity. Thank you, Kelsey, for sharing your research, insights, and perspectives with our students! #Ethnomusicology #IndigenousMusics #Binnizá #Zapotec #UNMmusic by @unmmusic

UNM Alumnus Santiago Alfonzo-Serrano to Join Sarasota Opera’s Apprentice Artists Program University of New Mexico alumnus Santiago “Santi” Alfonzo-Serrano will join Sarasota Opera’s 2027 Apprentice Artists Program, spending nearly three months performing, coaching and collaborating with fellow artists in Sarasota, Florida. The Venezuelan baritone, who earned his Master of Music in Voice Performance at UNM in 2025, will participate from January 4 through March 21. Established in 1982, the program helps trained singers transition from student to professional life through experience with a professional opera company. “I am very excited about this upcoming program! Getting to meet other colleagues, expanding my musical network, and having dedicated time to focus on my beloved craft for three months is a fantastic opportunity,” Alfonzo-Serrano said. He will cover the role of Dick Deadeye in Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore and perform as a Lackey in Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos. He will also sing in the choruses of Jenůfa, Ariadne auf Naxos, La traviata and H.M.S. Pinafore. His schedule includes three concerts of operatic scenes and arias, including one with orchestra, as well as coaching and master classes. At UNM, Alfonzo-Serrano studied with Dr. Michael Hix and coached with Dr. Kristin Ditlow. His university opera roles included John Brooke in Mark Adamo’s Little Women and Count Almaviva in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. Since graduating, he has portrayed the Pirate King in Albuquerque Little Theatre’s The Pirates of Penzance, performed with Gonzo Opera and made his debut with the Santa Fe Symphony Chorus in Rachmaninoff’s The Bells. Before leaving for Sarasota, he will join fellow UNM alumna Mary Brzezinski and current master’s student Maxwell Reilly for a recital on November 6 at 6 p.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. Four of the eight finalists in the UNM Concerto Competition are cellists. 🎻 Miaoqian, Larch, Marco, and Greg earned their places with concertos by Dvořák, Shostakovich, and Gulda. Behind each finalist is a whole studio of cellists who share stands, rehearse together, and support one another on every step of the way. I’m proud of every Cello-Lobo, whether taking the stage this Sunday or cheering from the audience. This is what it means to grow together—as musicians, colleagues, and a community. Congratulations to all eight finalists across @unmmusic! 📅 Come hear them live: Sunday, November 1 · 4:00–6:00 PM · Keller Hall. 🎻 Want to become a Cello-Lobo? Studio auditions are February 15 and 20, 2027. Details on the final slide. #CelloLobos #UNMMusic #ConcertoCompetition #Cello #UNM by @unmmusic
