Four parachutes. One hijacker. Why four?

On November 24, 1971, Dan Cooper demanded four parachutes and $200,000. In Seattle, the 36 passengers got off. Several crew members stayed aboard. The FBI says he jumped with two parachutes, including an instruction chute that had been sewn shut. Cord from another helped tie the money bag.

The evidence shows what he used. It does not tell us why he demanded four. What's your theory?

Nine years after the hijacking, a boy found $5,800 in rotting twenty-dollar bills by the Columbia River. Their serial numbers matched the ransom.

That is a real link to the case. It does not tell us exactly where Cooper landed, how the money reached the river, or whether he survived. The rest of the $200,000 has not been found.

What does this find prove to you?

Before D.B. Cooper became a mystery, 36 passengers and several crew members were caught in a hijacking.

On November 24, 1971, a man calling himself Dan Cooper boarded Flight 305 in Portland. He said he had a bomb and demanded $200,000 and four parachutes. In Seattle, the passengers were released. Several crew members stayed aboard. He jumped a little after 8 PM from the rear stairs.

The fate of the man is unresolved. The danger to those aboard was real. What would you have asked the crew about that second flight?

A tie left behind. A DNA sample, but no answer.

The FBI says Cooper left his black tie on Flight 305 and later recovered DNA from it. The sample and the handling history limit what it can establish. A mixed sample does not identify one man by itself.

He called himself Dan Cooper. In 1971, he boarded Flight 305, claimed he had a bomb, and demanded $200,000 and four parachutes.

After the passengers were released in Seattle, the plane took off again. Cooper jumped from the rear stairs into the night. He was never found. In 1980, a boy found $5,800 in ransom money near the Columbia River. The rest of the money, and Cooper's fate, remain unknown.

Cooper escaped through the Boeing 727's rear airstairs. The hijacking exposed a simple problem: those stairs could be lowered in flight.

The fix was an airflow-powered lock. They named it the Cooper vane.

One crime changed aircraft design.

Cooper's escape plan depended on the Boeing 727. He ordered Flight 305 to stay low and slow, with the landing gear down, flaps set, and the rear stairs open.

He knew exactly what the aircraft could do.

How did he know so much?
