Tl:dr 8.5 out of 10 Lotus flowers. If this doesn’t win Best Picture I’ll kiss a fat, sweaty man square on his canker-riddled ‘taint. With tongue.

The sort of sprawling, wonderfully shot epic that Hollyweed used to churn out on a semi-regular basis. Think Ben Hur or Lawrence of Arabia.

Every big star involved gives peak performances. I shan’t comment further in this regard except to say that - Leguizamo - if he hadn’t already, has cemented his National Treasure status and Pattinson is quietly lapping the field in the race for best actor of his generation.

The set pieces - Cyclops, Circe, the Sirens, &tc. - are fine… but the heart of the movie is everything that takes place in Ithaca. It’s those scenes that will win the awards.

Nolan is very clearly using this millennia old story to state some plain truths about the current era. While I understand and agree with that message and genuinely appreciate how well crafted every aspect of this movie is - and despite my earlier effusiveness - it’s not the sort of film I personally feel the need to immediately rewatch.

1. Terry Gilliam - the man does nothing but create entire universes. I’ve enjoyed them all.

2. David Lynch - If I have to explain, you’ll never understand.

3. Kathryn Bigelow - She’d rank here if all she ever made was Near Dark. Fortunately for us all - she made more and better.

4. Coen brothers - Are you shitting me? The only cats that put my ass in a seat every single time they drop a new one. Every. Single. Movie.

5. The foremost foot fetishist in all the land. Amongst other accomplishments - he gave us the best Elmore Leonard adaptation ever filmed.

⬅️ And so I just spent the afternoon with a friend at Knoxville Fanboy Expo.

There were 4 vendors with a strong comic selection. Slab prices were more in line with reality than the last few years - but older raw books were exorbitantly overpriced.

Now I hafta track down the rest of the Earth One HCs.
