The act of writing became a way to steady myself and look directly at what I once avoided. Grateful when readers see this as part of a larger dialogue. #UnspeakableThings by @unspeakablethingsbook

Dr. Lonsway's work was eye-opening to me. The very things we typically see as red flags when we hear sexual assault allegations are often common characteristics of real sexual assault. #UnspeakableThings by @unspeakablethingsbook

This book began as something I needed to understand for myself. It means more than I can say to see it resonate with others. #UnspeakableThings by @unspeakablethingsbook

Sometimes clinging to ambiguity is a survival mechanism. Sometimes telling yourself a version of events that you can live with – that it was your fault or a misunderstanding, that you wanted it all along, maybe even that you should be flattered – is the only way through. And sometimes, when you're ready, you have to look directly at what happened. #UnspeakableThings by @unspeakablethingsbook

To come to terms with any form of sexual assault is to reckon with a traumatic loss of control over your body and life. To blame yourself afterward is an attempt to regain some of that lost control retroactively, for the fastest way to reassert control is to convince yourself you never lost it in the first place. The way power works in these situations is so much more complex than we're taught. #UnspeakableThings by @unspeakablethingsbook

When what’s happened feels too devastating to confront, we tell ourselves whatever we have to so that we can bury it and move on. Sound familiar? #UnspeakableThings by @unspeakablethingsbook

One of the hardest parts of confronting the past was untangling what actually happened from the story I'd told myself to survive. #UnspeakableThings by @unspeakablethingsbook
