Our department's statement of support and solidarity as Black communities fight for justice. Black lives matter.

The UNT Department of Philosophy and Religion supports the impassioned protests taking place in Denton, around the nation, and around the world in response to yet another act of dehumanization and violence against an African American citizen.
We mourn the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Atatiana Jefferson, Darius Tarver, and so many other Black Americans. This violence is indicative of compounded systemic issues which reach back for centuries and calls for more than individual response, more than words and sentiments. Protests have the power to ignite change and we are grateful for those who have taken to the streets to demonstrate with their bodies—even in a time of pandemic—that enough is enough. However, we also recognize that long term commitments are needed to address and reform the ways our institutions and systems are informed by white supremacy, heteropatriarchy, and exploitative ideologies that disproportionately harm Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) as well as the Earth. Black lives matter.
The UNT Department of Philosophy and Religion is committed to the long haul— we teach, write, think, deliberate, and act to demand justice for all peoples and the planet. We pledge to strengthen our efforts to be a part of the solution to social injustice in continuity with deep planetary exploitation; to improving our curriculum in the areas of diversity and inclusion; to extending our outreach to the wider community to address inequalities of access to higher education; and to support our students and colleagues in minority groups so that our shared academic journey is informed by equity, reciprocity, and respect. by @unt_phil
