Burnout can come when you’ve been carrying too much for too long. And sometimes you don’t even realize how heavy it’s been until you pause long enough to feel the weight of it. If you’ve ever seen the Disney film Encanto and know the song “Surface Pressure” sung by the eldest daughter, Luisa Madrigal, you can probably relate to the words and the pressure she’s feeling around having to be “the strong one” in her family and carry around the pressure of family expectations her whole life.

It’s important to recognize signs of burnout that impact the body physically, emotionally, and mentally. There are signs like constant exhaustion or fatigue, irritability, feeling like nothing you do matters, or feeling overwhelmed related to specific areas of your life that become chronic. It’s worth it to step back and assess if what you’re doing is aligned with your values (much like the Madrigal sisters do in the movie Encanto!). Most importantly, know that you don’t have to hold everything by yourself, and reaching out for support is one important step towards addressing burnout. by @untetheredtorooted

Burnout is the response to prolonged and chronic overwhelm that can have physical, mental, and emotional impacts on your body.

If any of these feel familiar, know that you're not alone. And pushing through may not be the only response you have to take. 💛 by @untetheredtorooted

Academic achievement was never about not wanting to complete my work. In fact, as a high achiever, I wanted to complete the work and get the highest possible grade! So, as a pretty creative kid, I did what I needed to time wise to complete my work even though it was literally burning the (sleep) candle at both ends 🙃

When I learned more about what I needed to succeed and when the field developed its own understanding of ADHD more, I realized that my brain needed several changes to my environment to do my best! That may not be what everyone needs, but it was important to recognize how my environment needed to change to work for me.

Understanding that struggle is one of the reasons why I do what I do now in helping people find strategies, skills, and support to help them succeed in their workplace or school.

If you have ADHD and want to work through some skills or strategies, reach out at my link in bio for a free consult to see if we are a fit! 🧠✨

In our latest episode, I invite Lexi Mattocks @lexi_adaptive_athlete to share her powerful journey of surviving foster care adversity and finding identity in becoming a survivor and a community leader. Lexi grew up in an abusive household where she became the whistleblower for her family’s struggles while dedicating herself to protecting her seven foster siblings, often sacrificing her own goals to keep them safe. We talk about what it meant for her to become a guardian for her severely disabled foster brothers, and how that experience shaped her into an advocate for differently abled people. Lexi opens up about surviving homelessness during her final year of college, and how she found healing, discipline, and a new sense of identity through powerlifting. We also explore the tools she leaned on to cope in her twenties, and why those same tools needed to evolve as she enters her thirties and a new chapter: motherhood. Lexi speaks candidly about confronting generational trauma, grieving what she didn’t have, and why she believes there is real courage in knowing when and how to ask for help. She reflects on the role models she needed to lean on throughout her life, and the lessons she’s carried into her advocacy work today.

You can find Lexi on Instagram @lexi_adaptive_athlete or on YouTube @LexiAdaptiveAthlete

One of the things Lexi Mattocks @lexi_adaptive_athlete shared in the latest episode of Untethered to Rooted was how she learned to logically reason through moments that used to bring up fear. Her therapist used a common CBT technique that encouraged her to pause, get grounded, and ask herself the "worst case scenario" question: “What’s the worst that can happen right now?” For Lexi, reasoning logically through certain scenarios worked for her to shift her anxiety that caused her to spiral. This question helped her to check in with reality and helped her feel empowered, but even more, therapeutic support helped remind her she didn't have to carry those secrets and wasn't alone.

🎧 There’s so much wisdom that Lexi drops in this conversation. Listen to the full episode wherever you get your podcasts. by @untetheredtorooted

Okay, this is actually something that I have wondered and imagined before. If your body could text you, it wouldn’t send paragraphs. It'd probably send small, honest reminders that, when you read them, you realize you needed these reminders. What do you think yours would say today? 👀🤔 by @untetheredtorooted

Sometimes grief makes us feel like our feelings are fickle. Some days you’re feeling okay, and other days you’re not. And even years later, you may still have moments that feel as hard as some of the acute days of the initial loss. La Quanna Cooper’s reflection to honor where you are at and to meet your grief slowly is such a good reminder that grief doesn't have an end date, but it does evolve and can transform over time.
