If you’re looking for a story that feels like a fever dream of nostalgia and heartbreak, you really have to pick up Ahn Love by Frances Park. It starts in such a quiet, heavy place where Margaret is visiting her 90 year old father, Sam, who’s living in this tiny apartment, just waiting on his orchids to bloom because he’s convinced that’s the magic key to bringing his late wife back. That tiny, hopeful superstition is what kicks off this massive trip back to the summer of 1969.

Most of the book happens on a seven day cruise across the Pacific, and Frances Park just nails that feeling of being a lovesick teen. Margaret (who everyone calls Monkey) is right in the middle of all this family drama, but she’s also falling head over heels for Adam Kang. He’s this dashing but deeply troubled Korean-British guy, and their romance feels so intense because, on a ship, hours feel like years. It’s that classic first love vibe where every look feels like a life-altering event.

But what’s really interesting is that underneath all that dreamy romp energy, there’s some pretty dark stuff simmering. You’ve got a massive betrayal from an uncle you’d never suspect, and then there’s Margaret’s mom, whose chance encounter with a Brazilian playboy on the ship basically sets a timer on her life for the next ten years. It’s wild to think about how one single week at sea could totally rewrite a family’s entire future.

The writing itself is just gorgeous: it’s moody, a bit erotic, and honestly kind of tragic. Frances Park plays with this idea of clocked love, or the way time stretches and shrinks depending on whether you’re falling in love or grieving. It’s the kind of book that makes you look back at your own life and wonder which specific summer changed everything for you. It’s a beautiful, messy tribute to the memories we carry.

I often imagine what it would be like if my parents were still around. Would I take good care of them? Or would we slowly drift apart over time? Ahn Love tells the story of the Ahn family, who were once complete and happy, but everything changed after the tragic death of the mother, leaving Sam Ahn without the love of his life. Still, his four children stay with him into adulthood. On his 90th birthday, all of them come home to celebrate, especially Margaret. The heavy moment brings Margaret back to memories she can’t forget, especially a family cruise they took in 1969.

The 3️⃣ Things:

🥀𝑮𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒇 𝒊𝒔 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒐.
While dealing with the loss of her mother, Margaret sometimes forgets that she also lost her father in a way. Her father, who still faithfully visits her mother’s grave, is actually holding onto many secrets Margaret never knew about. Some parts of the book really hit deep, while others left me questioning things; especially Margaret’s story about losing Eggman. I really wish the writer had expanded more on that.

🗽𝑫𝒖𝒂𝒍 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒉𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒔.🚢
The book moves between 2019 and 1969. If you’ve read it, you’ll definitely remember Uncle Bong. I really like his character he’s brave enough to change his fate despite being looked down on. Even though his family sometimes feels embarrassed by him, his cheerful personality hides his sadness. This book is more character driven than plot driven. I also liked Margaret and Adam’s relationship after the cruise.

🏡𝑵𝒐𝒕 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒇𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕.❤️‍🩹
This book reminds me that no family is truly perfect. I like how attentive Margaret was to her mother during the cruise. She handled her mom’s emotions so maturely, even though she was only 14 at the time. Even though I’m not a big fan of the author’s writing style, this book still managed to make me cry.
