Supported by by a grant from the U.S. Army’s Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer Program, @untphysics professor Dr. Usha Philipose is leading the second phase of a project to develop infrared sensors that go beyond current capabilities for thermal imaging. She’s joined by Drs. Arkadii Krokhin, Chris Littler, and A. J. Syllaios, all from the physics department as well.

“Our goal is to investigate the fundamental properties of materials associated with thermal sensing and thus contribute to the development of efficient, reliable and sensitive imaging systems,” Dr. Philipose said.

The goal of the overall project is to improve bolometer-based sensors that detect heat instead of visible light. Thousands of these microscopic sensors work together to create thermal images used in applications from military night vision to supporting firefighting. Disha Bhakta is working on her @untbsciences undergrad degree (with a @untchem minor) while helping freshman navigate their first year on the @unt campus as a COS Peer Mentor!

“As an international student, my experience at UNT has taught me a lot about adjusting to a new environment, becoming more independent, and staying focused on my academics and future goals,” said Disha, who joined the COS Peer Mentor program three semesters ago to help support fellow students. She enjoys that the program helped her get involved in volunteering and leadership on campus, and that it encourages students to connect, learn, and support one another.

“College can feel overwhelming sometimes, but you don’t have to figure everything out on your own,” she said. “It’s okay to ask questions, take things one step at a time, and give yourself time to adjust!”

Disha’s long-term goal is to pursue a PharmD and build a career in pharmacy. To learn more about the College of Science’s Peer Mentor Program and get involved, visit our website cos.unt.edu by @untscience

Congratulations to Abdullah Ali Maruf for earning an award for his research from the American Chemical Society’s Division of Catalysis Science and Technology (CATL) at the 2026 @amerchemsociety conference in Chicago! Abdullah is a @untchem doctoral student working in the surface lab of Dr. Jeffry Kelber, seeking knowledge that could aid in developing chemical processes that are cleaner and more energy efficient.

“In practice, our research allows us to build catalysts out of earth-abundant elements for carbon conversion and plastic upcycling, improving semiconductor thin-film interfaces at the atomic level,” he said. “This kind of surface science can influence energy, manufacturing, and technology capabilities, and my hope is that my research can bridge fundamental science with real applications in clean energy and advanced electronics.”

Abdullah said he has loved the process of continually learning and collaborating as his Ph.D. journey has progressed. “I hope the coming year will be a year where I can turn a lot of the work we have been doing in the lab into meaningful scientific contributions and continue growing as an independent researcher,” he said. by @untscience

Cory Greger is a @untmathematics doctoral student and the recipient of the 2026-27 Dan Maudlin Scholarship! Cory is pursuing a career in academia, fueled by a passion to advance his research projects and teach math to others. He said his interest in mathematics is philosophically motivated.

“At a high level, I am interested in questions of truth and proof, and there are very few subjects which handle these topics so intimately as in mathematics,” said Cory. “On a more practical level, I am interested in the interdisciplinary nature of math and its role in almost every physical and social science.”

Scholarship season is upon us, and applications are open now until February to apply for 2027-28 college and departmental awards! College of Science students can find more information and apply on our website cos.unt.edu/scholarships by @untscience

Now a wildlife biologist with @texasparkswildlifefoundation, @untbsciences alumna Tessa Boucher (‘20, ‘23 M.S.) collects data about fauna and flora, counting how many particular species are in a region and monitoring disease or parasites, for instance. Much of her work also involves educating landowners about how to best care for their land, advising on different ecological issues.

She says that there is no “typical” workday, and she is always testing something new. “A really fun thing about being a wildlife biologist is that you’re always learning,” Tessa said. “It’s almost like everything is an experiment.”

She has encountered a wide array of animals on the job, from turkeys, deer, and coyotes to buffalo, mountain lions, and even a zebra and a giraffe! Read more about how her time at @unt prepared her for an adventuresome career in ecological science in the newest issue of The North Texan! by @untscience

Meet another one of our awesome Peer Mentors, Sebastian Rodriguez, a @untbsciences major who is also minoring in @untchem and Spanish! The COS Peer Mentor program pairs newer students with experienced mentors who help them adjust to college life, develop strong academic and personal habits, and connect them with campus resources.

“I enjoy helping other students feel more comfortable navigating @unt, and I saw the program as an opportunity to use my own experiences to help others navigate their first year here,” said Sebastian, who is fluent in Spanish and has also served as an Eagle Ambassador and a College of Science Student Ambassador. “I’ve enjoyed getting to know my mentees and sharing things I wish I had known when I was a freshman!”

Sebastian’s academic goals include earning an A in both Microbiology and Anatomy & Physiology this year and understanding the material well enough that he can tutor others on the subjects.

Learn about the @unt researchers who are developing new way to test next-generation solar cells for space!

Dr. Bibhudutta Rout of @untphysics is leading a multidisciplinary research team in the development of a radiation testing platform that allows observation of electronic devices as they’re exposed to conditions that mimic those in space. Their findings point to materials for solar cells that may be more resistant to radiation damage than conventional testing has shown, which has implications for the design and durability of satellites’ solar power systems. Read more about the project, which involves students and faculty from six other institutions along with researchers at the @nasaglenn Research Center, at cos.unt.edu by @untscience

Did you know we have a Peer Mentor Program designed to help our students lead and succeed? Meet Sebastian Rojas, a double major in @untmathematics and @untphysics and COS Peer Mentor who enjoys connecting with fellow STEM majors and assisting them in finding the resources they need to navigate their time at @unt with ease.

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help!” he said. “Especially when things are difficult, that is your chance to act. Ask questions, don’t be afraid of being wrong, and remember that learning is a lifelong process.”

As well as being a peer mentor, Sebastian is putting in the work to keep his 4.0 GPA and build his future career by attending networking events at UNT, like the UNT Career Center’s STEM Fair coming up on September 23 and Broaden Your Scope on October 14! Check out @untcareercenter for event info and registration. by @untscience
