PPPM faculty member Julie Voelker-Morris is in England this month leading The Leader in You, a study abroad course on leadership and revolutionary imagination, alongside co-instructor Dr. Barbara Mossberg.

Week one took students through Oxford: lectures, botanical gardens, museums, and some of the city’s most storied rooms. Each student is researching an Exemplar whose own time abroad shaped how they saw and changed their world. Next stop, London. by @uo_pppm

Congratulations to Seng Nu Pan, who recently began a position as a Local Government Management Fellow through ICMA. The fellowship is a competitive, career-launching program that places recent MPA graduates in one-year management-track roles at local governments across the country, working directly under the mentorship of a senior city or county leader.

It’s a selective path into public service, and finalists are chosen for their academic record, leadership potential, and commitment to serving communities. We’re proud to see Seng Nu Pan carrying PPPM values into local government and the kind of work that makes cities and counties run.

Congratulations, Seng Nu Pan. We can’t wait to see the impact you make. by @uo_pppm

98% of our 2025 PPPM master’s graduates were employed or pursuing further education in their chosen field within six months of graduating.

That success held across all three programs: the Master of Public Administration, the Master of Nonprofit Management, and the Master of Community and Regional Planning.

Whatever change you want to make in the world, PPPM would love to help you get there. Explore our master’s programs through the link in our bio. by @uo_pppm

Congratulations to Dr. Yizhao Yang, who received the 2026 University of Oregon Sustainability Award for Research and Scholarship.

The award recognizes a UO researcher whose work has made significant contributions to knowledge related to sustainability. It’s sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation.

Dr. Yang’s research examines the connections between place, policy, and people in building sustainable, livable communities. Her work spans several Asian countries, examining how cultural and institutional factors shape sustainable planning and how those policies can translate across different urban contexts. It’s a well-earned honor for a scholar whose research spans the Pacific Rim from Oregon and Ecuador to Japan and China.

Congratulations, Dr. Yang! by @uo_pppm

Happy National Intern Day!

This past year, the PPPM Internship Program spanned 85 internships across four terms. Undergraduate and graduate students interned with public and nonprofit organizations alike. Many stayed close in Lane County, while others worked across Oregon, around the country, and beyond.

These internships turn what PPPM students learn in the classroom into real experience, and they connect our students to the public, private, and nonprofit partners who help shape their careers. To every intern and every host organization, thank you. by @uo_pppm

Public sector leadership is different. It isn’t about profit for shareholders. It’s about serving the community, especially people struggling most.

This fall, Lane County Administrator Steve Mokrohisky is teaching PPPM 407: Seminar on Leadership in the Public Sector. In his words, it’s a class about public trust, engagement, and transparency, and working with communities and agencies to tackle real challenges.

It’s a dynamic seminar for undergraduate and graduate students. Steve draws on his own career, brings in outside speakers from city managers to nonprofit leaders across Lane County and Oregon, and makes room for students to share their own experiences.

PPPM students, add it to your fall schedule. by @uo_pppm

Looking for solutions for welcoming and clean public spaces? Two recent PPPM graduates have answers.

Thomas Nguyen evaluated every public restroom in downtown Portland, examining how well they meet the needs of the residents, visitors, and workers who use them. His takeaway: restroom design signals who’s considered to belong in public space and who isn’t, and making restrooms more accessible makes our cities work better for everyone. Thomas graduated with a BA in PPPM and a minor in Political Science.

Nicole Heurgue studied Lane County’s Master Recycler Program, surveying participants to measure its impact on waste-related knowledge and habits. She found the program boosts sustainable practices and encourages people to share what they learn with others. Nicole hopes her work shows that curiosity, passion, and persistence can turn anyone into a researcher. Nicole graduated with a BA in PPPM and a minor in Legal Studies.

Congratulations, Thomas and Nicole! by @uo_pppm

Wonder what PPPM honors students recommend to celebrate urban music and combat urban heat? Look no further.

Carrie Bohannon examined how infill development shapes surface temperatures and vegetation in Seattle and Chicago — finding that sites cool when new projects add greenery or replace heat‑trapping concrete. She recommends dense and green building standards. Carrie graduated with a BA in PPPM with minors in Landscape Architecture and Disability Studies. Read her thesis linked in the bio.

Ezra Briskin explored how local governments can use comprehensive planning to strengthen local music ecologies. His takeaway: music builds community, fuels cultural economies, and deserves a place in the civic fabric. Ezra graduated with a BA in PPPM from the Clark Honors College.

Thinking about biking to campus but already picturing rain, hills, and showing up sweaty? Eugene makes it easier than you’d expect.

In this video from the University of Oregon, PPPM student Bella Ebner shows why Eugene is one of the best cities in the country to bike. There are 190 miles of bike lanes, more than 70 miles of shared-use paths, and nearly 10 miles of protected bike lanes. @bikeleague ranks Eugene as a gold-level city, and biking here is often faster, cheaper, and better for the environment than driving.

Active and bicycle transportation is a focus at the School of Planning, Public Policy and Management, spanning research, planning courses, and advocacy.
