Spaces between buildings are where people meet for the first time, glance at, joke with, meet regularly, and support each other. The Barcelona Municipal Institute of Urbanism engages with us offering students an opportunity to support a real-world need of affordable housing. The scale of the work from fine-grained to territorial, urban planning to architectural, community to housing units, and early mass-timber material implications, are necessary for this planning process. Local Architects, Landscape Architects, Planners and Ecological Urbans support students as local instructors, lecturers and periodic reviewers. Partnering with the Barcelona Municipal Institute of Urbanism offers students ability to see their proceeding and their other architecture school collaborations including drawing and model exhibition in their ground floor space. The 2027 program may benefit from an even closer laboratory collaboration of teaching, research projects such as air quality at the neighborhood school for children in schools, and future student opportunities. taken in Ajuntament de Barcelona by @uoarchenv

Weekend break on one's own at Sant Pol de Mar previous fishing village. This town is small and does not have a marina port making it more historic on the way people access the sea. It has broad beaches and plentiful places to eat reasonably on the beach. It is an easy day trip from Barcelona. Geologically it's one of the first Maresme coastal towns where the rock formations touch the sea and offer swimmers the ability to interact with sea creatures that is a foreshadowing of the L'Emborda villages up the coast where coves and rocks and crystal clear water are clues to the Pyrennes touching the Sea. taken in Sant Pol de Mar by @uoarchenv

2025 student Trevor Torres @aka.trevv street design via Fine-grained Urbanism methods of analysis for his team's work including Tiare Cockcroft @tiare_mrc and Luca Krueger to enhance the human-scaled inhabitation of Marina del Prat Vermell streetscapes. Analysis was done in other streets as baseline areas of previously autonomous villages in Barcelona during walking visits based on their theoretical understanding. The reinforcement of targeted observation with a topical understanding, a way to evaluate values for each street location, comparative analysis and then a way to inform street level design was effectively demonstrated with this team's work. 2025 student Sam Hewitt's territorial scale drawings with partners @niksjogren and @defocurry3 for "Refugees Nuevos." His group's design process centered around the health of children for a ground floor school and exterior space for parents, children and other residents to make vital community interactions. Fine-grained Urbanism research focused on urban heat island effect qualities of public and private space including 1) Materials + Structure and Design + Massing and 2) Built and Natural characteristics. The resulting design strategies across scaled included 1) surface color, 2) canopy cover and 3) ground cover. This Spring, graduating B.Arch student Gabriel Alvarado was awarded the 2026 American Institute of Architects Medal for Academic Excellence by a committee of UO faculty in recognition of his academic performance, boundary-pushing design and media experimentation, and continuous deep engagement with studio and course problems, including design studio work connected with climate realities in his home country of Honduras. Gabriel received his award in June at the 2026 AIA Conference in San Diego. This Fall, Gabriel is beginning his M.Arch studies in Sustainable Environmental Design at the Architectural Association in London through a scholarship from the Rick Mather Foundation. For “Unserved Architectures,” his terminal studio project at UO Portland with Prof. William Smith, Gabriel proposes a semi-permanent, modular scaffold-based infrastructure intervention system for San Pedro Sula, Honduras, a city of roughly 700,000 residents whose rapid growth has outpaced the provision of basic services—producing cascading failures of flooding, absent sewage treatment, and chronic electrical blackouts. The project symbiotically attaches an armature of Layher Allround ringlock scaffolding onto the existing building stock, delivering distributed infrastructural capacity—rainwater harvesting and solar energy generation—through a catalogue of twelve modules that occupants complete using locally sourced and informally available materials such as lámina de zinc, salvaged lumber, and ad banners. The underlying mechanism of occupant completion forces architecture to take a role of delivery of a primary, engineered “skeleton,” while enclosure, finish, and programmatic adaptation remain in the hands of residents, resolving the tension between systemic engineering reliability and contextual material appropriateness. The project argues that informal architecture emerges not only in response to economic and regulatory absences but to infrastructural absence itself. In doing so, Unserved Architectures repositions the architect’s agency from the authorship of finished form to the design of frameworks for the collective, distributed, and socialized ordinaries of daily life. @arq.g.a by @uoarchenv

"Thermal Commons" urbanism scaled work by Master of Architecture Portland student Mollie McNally @molliemacr8 . Impressive work for both it's consistently informed at various scales. A cohesive ordering system of recreational loops at the urban scale attuned to different metabolic rates in summer and winter and by area are proposed. Territorial scale connections between the Llobregat River and Montjuic are envisioned looking down to the block patio scale. Jardin Botanic de Barcelona by Carlos Ferrater (now OAB, Office of Architecture Barcelona) I remember this model in the office when I worked there in 1999. The exterior gardens are actually the capping of a landfill on Montjuic above the Mies Pavilion. Some of the Mediterranean specimen areas are familiar to our students from Oregon and California. Carlos Ferrater office (where I worked on the Zarragoza AVE high speed train station and two towers in Diagonal Mar) used fractal grid geometry as a mesh over the hill - potentially influenced by Borja Ferrater's expertise in biology and geometry. ***Shout out to dear colleague @ign24680 and his amazing @canaryislandsuo summer program with students from UO, UW, Cornell and Maryland! It's the absolute cutting edge of landscape architecture computational innovation and climate resilient research. His research reputation precedes him in Spain! Affordable senior housing in Barcelona. Onsite CLT construction tour organized by @klh_massivholz. Thank you!! So great to see this project from the rooftop for the neighboring rooftop (thank you portero)! Pre fab bathrooms by @porcelanosa aligned via etching at underside of CLT. Ground floor concrete with transfer beams from tighter wood spacing above. Loved to also see the steel "V" structural hip columns at the ground. Floor entry where the team is preserving some mature trees. Wonderful staging and site care often overlooked or undervalued. Thank you again KLH. 🙏🏼 by @uoarchenv
