Meet Assistant Professor Don Daniels, who has been at the University of Oregon for seven years. For Professor Daniels, the most rewarding aspect of teaching is engaging with his students, particularly when they ask unexpected questions and challenge his own thinking.

Outside the classroom, Professor Daniels loves staying active and spending quality time with his loved ones. You can often find him playing soccer, diving into video games, heading outdoors for some birdwatching, or simply hanging out with his family.

Lately, he has been on a bit of a whodunit binge. He has been diving into mystery and detective stories, having recently watched “The Residence”, “Murder Mystery”, the “Knives Out” movies, and “A Man on the Inside”, and he’s currently watching “The Thursday Murder Club.”

Meet Esme Henriquez Lara, a recent UO graduate with a degree in History and a minor in medieval studies. Esme is driven by a desire to understand modern society's roots; she focused her passion on ancient history, particularly the Roman transition from republic to empire.

Looking back at her time on campus, one of Esme’s absolute favorite memories comes from an art history course focused on medieval building practices. In a hands-on project, her class sketched a cathedral’s skeleton using traditional geometric forms, then headed to the lawn behind the library to recreate the plans in teams using only cords and posts.

Esme's advice to incoming students is to not let the fear of asking "obvious" questions hold them back, noting it is entirely okay not to know everything in a room full of peers.

Congratulations, and we wish you the best in your future endeavors, Esme!

Meet Associate Professor Steven Beda, who has been at the University of Oregon since 2016. For Professor Beda, the most rewarding aspect of teaching is talking with students about how they can use history to better understand and address contemporary problems to create a more just and equitable future.

Outside the classroom, Professor Beda likes spending time in nature. He enjoys hunting and fishing, often spending his free time planning his next trip or daydreaming about being in the woods or on the river. He also likes cycling on the road on nice, sunny days, as well as running through the forest on cold, rainy, mud-filled trails.

Something people would never guess about him is that he started college as a physics major and then reevaluated his plan after he failed calculus his first semester. Professor Beda notes that this experience highlights two important things: first, your interests will change, and you should embrace that; second, one bad quarter doesn't mean you're not cut out for college. He emphasizes that failing often just means you haven't found something that intellectually excites you yet, and finding that passion is what helps you develop good academic habits.

Lately, he has been reading "Rose/House" by Arkady Martine, exploring Becky Chambers' "Wayfarer" and "Monk and Robot" series, and recently finished watching "Murderbot" on Apple TV, though he firmly believes the books were much better.

Lab work on tour ✈️🧠🇮🇹
A big highlight of the International Multisensory Research Forum in very sunny Genova was sharing our lab’s work in a symposium, ‘Navigating sensory uncertainty in motor control: Multi-method insight across human and nonhuman primates’
The big question: how does the brain generate stable actions when sensory information it relies on is imperfect? We do this constantly — reaching when vision is unavailable, committing to a step before we know whether the surface will hold or slip, or moving when vision gives us a distorted view of the world.
Across methods, species, and career stages, the symposium brought together complementary perspectives on how the brain stabilizes action under uncertainty: by organizing action around the most reliable sensory information; how motor working memory is reinstated external to motor cortex when uncertainty is high; how the brain reweights vision and proprioception when they disagree; and how adding haptic feedback to visual feedback changes the motor cortical circuits involved in skilled hand control.
An extra special proud moment was seeing Taylor Wilson, a PhD candidate in our own Department of Human Physiology give an excellent talk.

Meet Annie Pollard (BS ’03, MS ’05) who originally came to the University of Oregon to study biology with a pre-veterinarian emphasis. However, a field trip to the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB) changed everything. Inspired by the coastal ecosystem, she fell in love with marine science, switched her focus, and went on to work as a marine biologist in places ranging from the Oregon Coast to Antarctica.

Eventually, Annie decided to change careers and started a brewery in Coos Bay, Oregon, with her husband, Carmen Matthews. She turned her college hobby of home-brewing beer, into a new career. Today, she and her husband own and run 7 Devils Brewery in Coos Bay, Oregon.

Despite her career change, Annie continues to use her University of Oregon education every day. The data analysis and analytical thinking skills she learned during her biology degrees help her manage business sales and perfect her beer recipes. She also stays connected to her roots by hosting regular educational talks at her brewery featuring OIMB researchers and students.

Meet Professor Amy Connolly, who began teaching at the University of Oregon after earning her PhD in 2014. For Professor Connolly, the most rewarding aspect of teaching is the opportunity to connect with students, whether it's in the classroom or one-on-one.

The best piece of advice she has ever received is: “focus on the process rather than the outcome.” Professor Connolly notes that while goals like achieving an 'A' or receiving recognition are admirable, shifting our focus toward putting forth our best effort, maintaining a positive mindset, and embracing curiosity is often more rewarding.

Outside the classroom, Professor Connolly likes spending time in nature. She enjoys camping, paddleboarding, hiking, and swimming in Oregon’s waters, activities that she is looking forward to doing this summer with her two sons.

One thing people may not know about her is that she loves old black-and-white movies and musicals. Some of her favorite movies are “Singin’ in the Rain,” " Notorious,” “My Fair Lady,” “Chicago,” and “Les Misérables."

Thank you for your hard work and dedication, Professor Connolly!
