🧠 FACULTY FRIDAY: LAB SPOTLIGHT 🔬

We’re expanding Faculty Friday to highlight research labs across the University of Arizona where NSCS and NSCI students have gained hands-on research experience!

This week, meet Dr. Jonathan Tullis, Chair of the Cognitive Science GIDP and Associate Professor of Educational Psychology.

🧠 RESEARCH FOCUS
Dr. Tullis and his team study how people learn, remember, and make decisions about their own learning. Their research explores memory, attention, metacognition, and decision-making, including how people connect new information to prior knowledge and how accurately they judge what they have learned.

The lab is also exploring how technologies like AI can help, or sometimes hurt, learning and how students decide when to rely on these tools.

🔬 UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
Students in the lab can gain experience running behavioral experiments, collecting and organizing data, coding responses, analyzing data, and communicating research. As students gain experience, they may take greater ownership of projects, develop research questions, and design their own studies.

The lab has included students from psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, educational psychology, and other backgrounds. More than a specific major or technical skill, Dr. Tullis looks for students who are reliable, communicate well, and are genuinely curious about research.

💡 ADVICE FOR STUDENTS
“Failure is incredibly common in research... The important thing is to learn something from those experiences and keep going.”

🚀 FUN FACT: As an undergraduate, Dr. Tullis helped build a rocket that was launched into the Northern Lights to collect data. Unfortunately, the rocket exploded over Alaska, so he still likes to say he was once a “rocket scientist.”

🏺 Outside of research and teaching, he enjoys making pottery.

Research opportunities for NSCS and NSCI students extend across many disciplines at UArizona. Follow Faculty Friday: Lab Spotlight as we highlight more of the labs where our students are learning and contributing!

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Genesis Arizmendi! 🎉

We are excited to congratulate Dr. Genesis Arizmendi, one of our Neuroscience & Cognitive Science (NSCS) faculty members, on receiving the Early Career Scholar Award at the 2026 University of Arizona Distinguished Faculty Awards ceremony on September 23, 2026! 🧠✨

Dr. Arizmendi is an Assistant Professor in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences with a joint appointment in Cognitive Science and teaches courses supporting both Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and the NSCS program.

Her community-centered research examines how bilingual language experiences shape learning, development, and access to opportunity for children and adults in multilingual and multicultural settings. Her interdisciplinary work is helping advance both clinical practice and our understanding of bilingual language and cognitive processes.

We are proud to have Dr. Arizmendi as part of our NSCS community and thrilled to celebrate this well-deserved recognition!

Congratulations, Dr. Arizmendi! 🌵🐻⬇️
