And speaking of going the distance…

Running the Detroit Free Press Marathon International Full or Domestic Half tomorrow? Keep an eye out for these same Cubs at the official U of D Jesuit hydration station on the Dequindre Cut! They’ll be handing out drinks and cheering you on!

History came to life for our Cubs!

Last week, the 8th graders of U of D Jesuit traveled to Washington, D.C., and Gettysburg for a weekend of exploration, learning, and unforgettable memories.
From the Lincoln Memorial and Capitol Rotunda to the International Spy Museum and Gettysburg’s Little Round Top, students discovered the places and stories that shaped our nation. They explored art and architecture, connected with a U of D Jesuit alumnus, and experienced history beyond the classroom.
Through thoughtful questions and new perspectives, our Cubs grew in intellectual curiosity and openness to growth while strengthening their understanding of why history matters.

A special thank you to our faculty chaperones, Ms. Rockwell, Ms. Gasperoni, Mr. Jeff Hill, and Mr. Lopus '14, for the time, care, and guidance that made this adventure possible! by @uofdjesuit

Throwback Thursday | 150 Years of U of D Jesuit

In October 1973, our students stepped up for the very first Century Walk, a 15-mile walk from the school to Rouge Park. Their goal was to raise $33,000 for the school. They raised nearly $40,000!

But one photo tells a story that goes far beyond dollars raised: students carried an injured classmate on a stretcher for the entire 15 miles so he could be part of the experience. Now THAT’S brotherhood.

Today, the Walk-a-Thon lives on as Pledge Detroit, still run by students, for students, raising money for their activities and clubs. Different name. Same spirit of showing up for one another.

Let’s keep this tradition going! We’re accepting donations for this year’s students through October 22.

UPDATE:
As we learn of Pope Leo XIV’s lung cancer diagnosis following yesterday’s successful surgery, we join Catholics around the world in continued prayer for our Holy Father, and all those facing cancer and serious illness, their families and caregivers, and the medical professionals entrusted with their care. May they find comfort in God’s love, hope in His presence, and strength in the prayers of others.

St. Ignatius of Loyola, pray for us.
_______________________________
As he prepares to undergo surgery today, we lift Pope Leo XIV in prayer, asking God to grant him healing, strength, and a full recovery.

We extend our prayers to all who are facing illness, undergoing medical procedures, or caring for loved ones in need of healing. May God also guide the hands and hearts of the medical professionals entrusted with their care.

May His grace bring comfort, strength, and peace to all.

St. Ignatius of Loyola, pray for us. by @uofdjesuit

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we celebrate a Cub whose connection to lacrosse and his roots reaches far beyond the field.
Auggie Killips ’27, a member of the U of D Jesuit varsity lacrosse team and a member of the Chippewa Tribe through his father, was selected to play for the Haudenosaunee Junior National Team.

For Indigenous Peoples, the origins of lacrosse stretch back centuries, carrying deep spiritual and cultural meaning. It is often called the Creator’s Game. The connection between lacrosse and the Jesuits also reaches back nearly 400 years, when Jesuit missionary Jean de Brébeuf encountered the centuries-old Indigenous game and described it using the French word crosse.

Today, that history creates a meaningful connection for Auggie: a student-athlete playing the game of his ancestors while receiving a Jesuit education.

For Auggie, wearing the Haudenosaunee colors is an opportunity to compete at an elite level, but also to honor his heritage, deepen his connection to his culture and represent something much bigger than himself.

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we’re proud to share Auggie’s story and celebrate the Indigenous cultures, traditions and people who gave the game of lacrosse to the world.

Before sunrise, the U of D Jesuit Dads’ Club had the griddles hot, fryer going, pancake batter mixed and the music turned up for a Breakfast Blitz in the carpool line.

Pancakes. Pigs in a blanket. Tunes. No fancy coffee order required. Just dads making sure Cubs and parents started the morning right with a hot, fresh breakfast.

Big thanks to Baasil Haashiim, Jonathan Jorissen ’98, Walter Ragland, Tom Willis ’95, Mark Wilhjelm, Jonathan Clark and Matt Hindelang for showing up before the crack of dawn, making the air smell a whole lot better and putting smiles on people’s faces.

Want in on the fun? The Dads’ Club invites all Cub dads to join them Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. in the UDJ Commons. Meet other dads, share ideas and have a great time with some great people. RSVP under the Parent Resources tab on our website (www.uofdjesuit.org) and click the Dads’ Club button.

Men for Others… with griddles.
