Thank you to everyone who joined us on Wednesday! Dr. Peter Thilly’s talk on opium and state power was immensely fascinating and drew a large, engaged audience. Thanks to Dr. Thilly, we gained valuable insights into opium trading posts, patterns of consumption, and the broader financial and political impact of the opium trade in late Qing society.

สุขสันต์วันสงกรานต์!

Songkran Day is a traditional festival celebrated in Thailand and some other Southeast Asian countries to mark the Thai New Year. It usually takes place from April 13 to April 15, although the duration may vary depending on the region. Songkran is known for its iconic water festival, where people engage in water fights, splash water on each other, and cleanse themselves to symbolize washing away the past year's misfortunes and welcoming the new year with a fresh start. The festival also involves various cultural and religious activities, such as making merit at temples, building sand pagodas, and participating in processions. It is a time for families to come together, offer prayers, make offerings to ancestors, and seek blessings for the coming year. Songkran is widely celebrated with joy, fun, and a sense of renewal, making it one of the most vibrant and festive occasions in Thailand and Southeast Asia.
