Researchers from the University of Memphis and Virginia Tech are exploring how a modified version ofย Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfareย can transform a game typically played for fun into a creative training tool for the Marine Corps.

The immersive scenarios give Marines the opportunity to practice planning, communication, teamwork, leadership, critical thinking, and decision-making under pressure. Afterward, they reflect on their choices through AI-supported after-action reviews, helping reinforce the learning process.

Early results show that this combination is helping improve scores on follow-up tests, suggesting that video games can be more than just entertainment. They can also serve as a tool for developing valuable skills that can be applied beyond the game! by @uofmcompsci

Congratulations to Dr. Vasile Rus for being selected as a 2026-27 Fulbright U.S. Scholar! Dr. Rus will collaborate on research at The National University of Science and Technology POLITEHNICA Bucharest, Romania this Fall.

"It is a great honor, highlighting the relevance of my research work. The Fulbright Scholar award and the University of Memphis' support will further enable my research agenda on code comprehension at a time when comprehension is becoming a critical human skill - as much of the draft generation of code or other type of content can be done by AI tools."

Please join the department in congratulating Dr. Rus on this incredible recognition! by @uofmcompsci

This Spring four of our students had the opportunity to collaborate on a new video game as part of their senior Capstone project. Oscar Barreto Lara, Meredith Logston, Noah Sandler, and Garrett Sueing worked with local independent game development studio, Dapper Duck Software, on Molly the Marble, a cozy adventure puzzle game about guiding a marble through levels made of cardboard, paper, and other household objects. The game will be feature at some events this summer, including The MIX Summer Games Showcase, an indie game event taking place during Summer Game Fest week in Los Angeles, California - putting this Memphis-made game on a national stage.

Joel Gerber, President of Dapper Duck, praised the students for the โ€œenergy, problem-solving, and technical skillโ€ they brought to the project. Congratulations to Meredith, Oscar, Noah, and Garrett on their contributions to the game!

Swipe to watch a trailer for Molly the Marble which will be available on Xbox and PlayStation later this month! by @uofmcompsci
