Life doesn't stop when you go back to school.
Nick Hill knows that better than most.
As a police investigator and father of three, flexibility wasn't a preference, it was a requirement.

CIC's fully online, asynchronous MS in information security and cyber leadership made it possible. No set class times. No commuting. Just real skills, real credentials and a degree that works around your life. by @uofsc_cic

Alumni Highlight 🤙 :

This week's spotlight is Alexandra Johnson ('25), a sports media graduate who is currently working as a seasonal social media associate at the Seattle Mariners.

Johnson says her CIC experience with gave her the confidence and real-world experience to launch her career in sports media. Through her internship with Gamecock Athletics, she applied classroom lessons to live game-day coverage, developed social media strategies and built lasting connections with classmates and mentors who made work and school feel like family.

Now in her first post-graduation role, she continues to rely on the skills she developed in the CIC, from graphic design techniques learned in Professor Van Kornegay's classes to creative storytelling, strategy and strong communication that continue to shape her work every day.

One of her favorite memories is working the 2024 Gamecock football game against Texas A&M, when months of planning, live coverage and teamwork culminated in an unforgettable night both on social media and on the field. Alumni Highlight 🤙 :

We are so excited to spotlight College of Information and Communications alumna Sarah Gilliland ('01), an MLIS graduate working as a senior policy manager, New Practice Lab at New America.

Gilliland credits her USC education with preparing her to build a career centered on serving people and communities. Whether working in public libraries or shaping policy, she says the ability to listen, ask thoughtful questions and understand people's needs has remained one of the most valuable skills she developed during her time at the university.

One of her favorite memories is Dr. Charles "Chuck" Curran's information literacy class, where students analyzed Oliver Stone's "JFK" using source materials of varying quality. The experience left a lasting impression and helped strengthen the critical thinking skills that continue to guide her work today.

This Fourth of July hundreds of thousands of Americans will head to the ballpark for baseball and fireworks. Rising senior Sarah Muñoz, a public relations major, is spending her entire summer at Citi Field.

Muñoz is interning with the New York Mets communications team, a position she learned about through the CIC Mentorship Match program.

CIC alumna Kayla Pace, ’18 broadcast journalism, is a social media content creator for the Mets and has been a mentor for Muñoz.

Pace says, "Sarah is so deserving of this opportunity, and I get to be in the office with her every day as she learns and grows — it’s enabled me to be a better mentor, getting to be a friendly face in a challenging new environment in real time."

Muñoz has gained hands-on experience in media relations and game-day communications while building the professional skills and connections that will help launch her career in sports communications.

"The experience has helped me strengthen my communication and professional networking skills while learning how a professional sports organization operates behind the scenes," Muñoz says.

Congratulations, Sarah! We're proud of you and can't wait to see where your career takes you next. Sarah Munoz and her mentor Kayla Pace at NY Mets stadium Citi Field. by @uofsc_cic

We said what we said.

The skills that make great communicators aren't about memorizing the right words for the right moment. They're about developing the judgment to know what the moment actually calls for. That's what we're teaching at CIC. by @uofsc_cic
