For architecture students preparing to apply to graduate school this year, we will be hosting our annual portfolio development workshops on Tuesdays between Fall Break and Thanksgiving at 4 PM in ARCH 129.

We also welcome graduate students, alumni, and local practitioners who are available to join us as reviewers and provide feedback on students’ work in progress applications.

Attendees and reviewers — RSVP using the QR code on the poster so we can make sure there are enough reviewers to give students meaningful feedback each week.

Please note: If you are planning to apply to the undergraduate architecture programs in Spring 2027, a separate series of workshops will take place in the second half of the spring semester. by @uofu_arch

Local architects, former students, and longtime friends gathered at the University of Utah School of Architecture to celebrate the legacy of Professor Emeritus Thomas B. Kass (1936–2022). Through his teaching, Kass encouraged students to approach design with curiosity, think critically, and recognize that every problem holds multiple possible solutions.

His influence continues to shape the way generations of architects think, create, and teach. by @uofu_arch

Research Spotlight: Nishat Miaji

Nishat presented the paper, “Enhancing Sustainability in Student Housing at the University of Utah: Linking Building Exposure to Perceived Indoor Environmental Quality,” at the 2026 CATE Conference! Her research found that window orientation alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Whether a room faces north, south, east, or west didn’t make a significant difference, while factors like ventilation, insulation, windows, layout, and construction quality had a greater impact on students’ comfort. While temperature was generally acceptable, noise and air quality stood out as areas needing more attention. by @uofu_arch

GOOD TO KNOW 💡

Things every SOA student should know about, from people and resources, to spaces and tools, we’re highlighting some of the things around the school that you might not know about, but definitely should!

1. SHOP UPGRADES

So many new gadgets and gizmos have made their way into the shop!

We spent all summer upgrading our tools, including TWO NEW LASER CUTTERS!! 👀✂️

Stop by the shop, complete your orientation, and talk to the techs to learn more about all the new equipment!

2. PROTOSPACE

The Protospace in the library has moved to the 1st floor!! All of the 3D printers, sewing spaces, recording studios, and more are now located together in one place, making it easier to find everything you need to bring your ideas to life.

3. MEET LUKE

If you haven’t met Luke Leither yet, he’s a valuable person to have on your team! Luke can help you find the books and resources you need in the library and if the library doesn’t have what you’re looking for, he’ll help track it down somewhere else or even purchase new materials requested by students.

He can also help you get access to Special Collections and historical archives, which can be an amazing resource for your architecture projects and research.

We’ve added new pinboards around the studios, new furniture above the Bailey Gallery, and new chairs throughout the building, theres much more like screens & projectors in the bailey, and replacements of some older screens around the classrooms!

Design Build Bluff Phase 1: COMPLETE !!

Foundations, stem walls, and the concrete slab are in, marking the completion of phase 1. As students head into phase 2, they are reflecting on everything they’ve learned so far, from concrete and formwork to learning directly on site while balancing project management responsibilities off site.

“The work is intense, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. But Bluff is about more than construction. We’re living and learning together on campus, exploring the landscape, sketching, attending community events, sharing meals, and finding time to look up at the night sky. Recently, we even caught a glimpse of Saturn.”

Dr. Yasmeen Lari left us inspired after spending the day with her. She takes a bottom-up approach to architecture that challenges the traditional role of the architect, focusing not on giving people resources, but on sharing knowledge, finding solutions, and empowering communities to build for themselves.

Her work reminds us that architecture doesn’t always have to be complicated. Sometimes, it starts with listening, learning from vernacular traditions, and finding simple, sustainable ways to help people and the planet. by @uofu_arch
