A special shout-out to the speakers and moderators—Dr. Kevin Coe, Dr. Leandra Hernández, Dr. Marleah Dean Kruzel, and Dr. Joshua Scacco—for sharing their expertise across sessions examining how information flows, advocacy, and violence can shape, strengthen, and undermine democracy. A little behind-the-scenes look at life in the Department of Communication this week! Following flooding in LNCO, faculty, staff, and students are navigating relocated classes, temporary workspaces, and a whole lot of boxes. Pictured here is our very own Dr. Leandra Hernandez, who currently holds the record for the most boxes packed by the university's amazing staff. We're so grateful to everyone who has coordinated rebuilding efforts and kept things running smoothly. A special thank you to @uofuhumanities Dean Dr. Wanda Pillow, Director of Operations Natalie Montoya, Administrative Director Kristina Bailey, the Department of Communication executive committee—Chair Dr. Avery Holton and Associate Chairs Dr. Sara Yeo and Dr. Andy King—and Academic Program Manager Travis Ciaramella for their leadership and support throughout this process. And, of course, a huge thank you to the many university staff members working tirelessly behind the scenes to get LNCO back on its feet! Faculty: Tell us how many boxes it took to fit your office. 👇 #uofucomm #uofu #uofuhumanities @uofulas @uofuhumanities by @uofucomm

Congratulations to Department of Communication Ph.D. student Baoying Fu, who received the 2026 Emerging Scholar in Responsible AI Award! Presented at the University of Utah Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute One-U Responsible AI Symposium, the award recognizes Baoying's contributions to advancing responsible, human-centered artificial intelligence through her research. Her advisor, Dr. Isabelle Freiling, highlights how Baoying's research advances responsible AI by providing actionable insights into how AI-generated information influences human judgment and how societal risks shape public support for AI governance. "To me, responsible AI means understanding how people actually perceive and are affected by AI-generated information," Baoying shared, "for example, how AI communicates scientific uncertainty, and using that understanding to inform more responsible AI communication and use." Please join us in celebrating Baoying and this well-deserved recognition! Special thanks to @trishgriffeephotography for capturing the occasion. That’s a wrap on this year’s Tribune Takeover, hosted by the Edna Anderson-Taylor Communication Institute and led by associate instructor Kira Hoffelmeyer! Over the past few weeks, journalists and newsroom leaders from the @sltrib joined students in COMM 4555: Intermediate Journalism to share a behind-the-scenes look at their work and the many ways journalists tell stories that matter to Utah communities.
