💧 What can our streams and rivers tell us about a changing world?

Meet Jennifer Follstad Shah, associate professor in the School of Environment, Society & Sustainability. As an aquatic freshwater scientist, she studies how global changes—including climate change and urbanization—affect water quality in streams and rivers.

Her research helps us better understand how changes happening on land can impact freshwater ecosystems and the water resources communities depend on. by @uofuenvironment

🌱 What can pollen tell us about food security in our own community?

Meet Murron McDonald, a University of Utah student majoring in Environmental & Sustainability Studies. Their research examines pollen limitation in Wasatch Community Gardens, exploring how access to pollinators can affect the plants and food we grow locally.

By studying what helps our gardens thrive, Murron’s research is contributing to a better understanding of food security and more resilient local food systems. 🐝🌼 by @uofuenvironment

🌎 Meet Ella Phillips, a student majoring in Environment and Sustainability Studies and Health, Society and Policy.

Ella’s research examines how communities on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley are disproportionately exposed to the health impacts of climate change.

Her work explores the intersection of environment, health and equity—and how the effects of a changing climate aren’t experienced equally across our communities. by @uofuenvironment

🔥 Utah’s 2026 fire season is already historic.

Halfway through the season, wildfires have burned a record 285,000 acres of Utah’s woodlands and forests — more than any year in the past four decades.

Across the state, more than 474,000 acres have burned from 755 ignitions, including the massive Babylon, Cottonwood and Widemouth 2 fires.

What makes this season especially significant isn’t just how much land has burned, but where. Three fires have each burned more than 60,000 acres of trees — something Utah has never experienced before.

And with weeks still left in fire season, northern Utah’s mountains have yet to see significant wildfire activity.
Researchers say the trend toward larger, more frequent forest fires has major implications for Utah’s ecosystems, water supplies, wildlife and recreation economies — as well as increasing the risk of flash flooding after fires.

🔥 Wildfire is also a natural part of many Utah ecosystems, helping clear fuels and regenerate species like aspen and Gambel oak. But the scale and frequency of recent fires are raising new questions about the future of Utah’s forests.

we will have a red butte/SLC fieldwork burst THIS SATURDAY at 8am. no experience is required to join, and we will have burritos before we go out!! we'll meet at the pavilion above PHC, and you will not need a car in order to join. sign up at the link in our bio!

this is a fieldwork day where we go out and check our wildlife cameras! it's pretty chill, and is basically a collection of hikes/walks to the cameras depending on which section you choose. if you choose a red butte section, you will be going into red butte canyon with your group, which is a protected research area right behind campus. more information on what each section entails is available once you click the link!

if you are looking to get to know other students at the U, get volunteer hours, hike in a protected area, or get reasearch/fieldwork experience, this is a great opportunity :)) taken in Red Butte Canyon Research Natural Area by @uofuenvironment

It only takes one spark.

With hot temperatures, drought and dry vegetation, Utah is entering what experts expect to be a challenging wildfire season. 🔥

Dr. Phil Dennison, professor and chair of the University of Utah’s School of Environment, Society & Sustainability explains why this year’s conditions are especially dangerous, what makes fires spread so quickly and the simple actions Utahns can take to help reduce wildfire risk.

Swipe through to see what he says about avoiding accidental ignitions to understanding how drought and wind fuel rapid fire growth, every precaution matters.

Spread the word, bring the stoke, and let’s make this a special day. Even if you didn’t know Tiare, we encourage you to come enjoy the day, celebrate someone truly incredible, and show love to her community.

We encourage you all to reuse your lei’s from last year. Feel free to bring lawn chairs and any yard games to set up near the tent!
