At the first Colleges of Liberal Arts & Sciences Salon Dinner, we discussed the work of the Center for Civic Discourse and Debate and the role thoughtful dialogue can play in our classrooms, communities and workplaces.

Understanding why we hold certain views—and learning to articulate them while engaging seriously with perspectives different from our own—helps us become better thinkers, better citizens and better professionals. These are skills that help us navigate complex issues, understand one another and work together toward better solutions.

Thank you to moderator Jennifer Napier-Pearce and faculty panelists Samantha Moore-Berg, Leslie Knapp, Rohan Chatterjee and Michael Middleton for leading a thoughtful conversation. by @uofulas

🌎 Meet Afton Mitchell, a College of Science ambassador majoring in Geological Engineering!

Afton loves that geological engineering can be applied to so many different areas and industries—but what has made her experience at the U especially meaningful is the hands-on learning and support she receives from faculty.

Whether it’s through mentoring, practical experience or simply stopping by office hours for help, Afton says her professors are always there to support students and help them succeed.

For Afton, Geological Engineering at the U is a place to explore where her interests can take her while learning from faculty who are invested in her success.

⛏️ Meet Lola Nielson, a junior in Mining Engineering!

Lola’s interest in mining started close to home—her dad works in the industry and introduced her to the field. When it came time to choose a university, the faculty, staff and close-knit culture of Mining Engineering at the U made the decision an easy one.

This past summer, Lola gained hands-on industry experience working with Ames Construction at Rio Tinto Kennecott’s tailings facility. Now, she’s bringing that experience back to campus and is excited to work in the U’s Tailings Lab this semester!

From industry experience to undergraduate research, Lola is discovering where a degree in mining engineering can take her. ⛏️

⛏️ Meet Constance Sauve, a second-year Ph.D. student in Mining Engineering!

Constance began her journey in geology, driven by a belief that materials and natural resources are fundamental to the way our society functions.

That passion ultimately led her to mining engineering, where she’s working toward a career that allows her to contribute to the responsible development of the resources our communities rely on every day.

For Constance, mining engineering is more than a field of study—it’s a way to help shape the systems and resources that support our world.

⛏️ Meet Ashtian Phillips, a junior studying Mining Engineering!

For Ashtian, one of the most exciting parts of the program is the number of research and hands-on opportunities available to undergraduate students.

His research focuses on making mineral extraction processes faster and more efficient, including the extraction of valuable metals. Beyond the classroom and lab, Ashtian spent last summer interning with WW Clyde, gaining experience in heavy civil construction.

From undergraduate research to industry experience, Mining Engineering at the U gives students opportunities to explore where their degree can take them.

⛏️ Meet Carson Jones, a sophomore in Mining Engineering!

For Carson, one of the best parts of the program is the close-knit community he’s found within the department.

From faculty to fellow students, he says there’s a genuine sense that everyone cares about one another, supports each other and wants to see each other succeed.

In Mining Engineering at the U, it’s not just about what you learn—it’s about the community you build along the way. ❤️

⛏️ Why Utah? Why mining engineering?

Located in the heart of the Intermountain West, the University of Utah is uniquely positioned to help lead the future of critical minerals development.

Pratt Rogers, chair of Mining Engineering at the U, explains how our location puts students and researchers near world-class mines and regional partners—and within a state that represents the full mining value chain. The Salt Lake Valley is even home to one of only two active copper smelters in the United States.

From critical minerals to the technologies and resources that power our everyday lives, there’s a role for the next generation of mining engineers.

Learn more about Mining Engineering at the U and discover what your role could be. ⛏️
