This Wednesday, we’re excited to welcome Omari Souza for a special Black History Month edition of Baseline Shift.

Omari is a designer, educator and researcher whose work explores the relationship between design, race and culture. He’s the founder of The State of Black Design and author of Design Against Racism, which looks at the role design can play in challenging inequality.

The event will start with Omari’s talk from 1–2pm in GL01 Agriculture, where he’ll share more about his work and experiences within the design industry.

After the talk, Omari will be running a workshop from 2:30–4:30pm back in the Typography Department in room B5, giving students the chance to take some of the ideas from the session further and think about how they can apply them within their own design practice.
The talk is open to everyone, but the workshop has just 30 spaces available. Rob Banham will be sending an email to all students with the sign-up link, so keep an eye on your inbox if you’d like to take part!

Here’s another one from the National Student Survey … ’97% of our students said the course often challenges them to achieve their best work.’

One of the most central aspects of graphic design is that simplicity is often an important goal, both in the way we work and in the work we produce. Sometimes delivering simplicity is … simple. Other times, it requires the unpeeling of complex layers of information and insight. Making things easy can be hard, and first instincts (built from personal experiences and prejudices) can often deceive us.

Design is about more than going with your gut and making aesthetic judgements. Through intensive reading, experimental practice and engaging with peers and users, our students gain hard-won insights into how to deliver work that is not just appealing or engaging, but also functional, accessible and humane. When students tell us the course is challenging, this is what they mean. Because stepping outside yourself can be difficult, but brings such great reward.

Another NSS stat … ’97% of our students said teaching staff have supported their learning well.’

This covers what happens in class, but also the less formal interactions in the open access studios, letterpress workshop and breakout spaces around the building.

I like this question as it reflects the idea that student learning happens very much in the domain of the individual, and that staff are there to encourage them along the way. Sometimes we can be quite prescriptive (our discipline has many objective rights and wrongs), but as much as possible we want to help students get beyond those basics and to learn on their own terms. It sounds like we’re doing that.

Hi everyone,

James Lloyd here, Director of Teaching & Learning in the Department. I’m taking over the student feed for a moment with some recent stats from the latest National Student Survey (NSS). We’re delighted to see improvements for our course across a range of areas – thanks so much to our graduating class for all the wonderful reviews!

‘100%’ is usually a good number, so we’ll start with this one …

‘100% of our students said teaching staff are good at explaining things’.

We think this result reflects not only the knowledge and communication skills within our incredible teaching team, but also the fact that we’re approachable and flexible in the way we interact with our students. Our small department building means that someone is always close at hand when students need to know things. In an increasingly digital world, we still prioritise face-to-face experiences for lectures, workshops and informal support. I hope this contributes to student perception in this area. I’m sure all university staff are good at explaining things, but we’re also very available and happy to help :-)

We thought we'd reassure everyone that, despite the heat, we are looking forward to seeing you at Michael’s celebration on Saturday, 2–5pm.

It’s an informal event, so please wear what you feel comfortable. There will be just a few short talks, and we have displays that draw attention to his very wide-ranging work and activities over the years.

We have lots of cold drinks and some snacks and do bring blankets if you fancy sitting outside under the trees outside – that some of you may remember when they were spindly saplings.

We had hoped to have a marquee, but alas, have been told it is too hot for this. We will therefore congregate in the Enterprise Centre opposite the Department, around 2.30 pm to hear the talks and then return to the Department. There will be people around to guide you.

If you are driving there is lots of parking outside the Enterprise Centre – you don’t need a permit.

If there is one person who has defined the student experience in Typography more than anyone over the last decade, it’s the incredible Geoff Wyeth @geoffwyeth . The week ahead represents his final days as a member of the teaching team, as he retires on high the year after winning his Teaching & Learning award for best tutor in our school. We can hardly contemplate the ways in which we’ll miss him.

Geoff has worked at the University for 34 years in range of roles, always with a focus on print. A huge shift in 2015 brought him into a full-time teaching post in the Department, and to say that he’s flourished here is a huge understatement. The same skills of diligence, patience and attention to detail that made him a great printer also make him a fantastic teacher. Geoff transformed the way that our design students feel about printing and materiality, and has been a constant source of support and encouragement to learn, experiment and stretch their imagination around what design for print can be. Geoff helped establish the new Historic Presses Workshop, that supports numerous research projects and conferences, sharing his love and knowledge of print with scholars across disciplines. He has continued the legacy of Michael Twyman and Mick Stocks in this regard, connecting all those who see opportunity in a passion for the printed page.

Last week staff held an intimate farewell event for Geoff (featuring an incredible ‘printer’s hat’ cake from former colleague and now pro-baker Polly Harte @waggledance2001 ) to celebrate all that he’s achieved, and everything he’s given us. If you have memories to share, or good luck messages to usher him into the next chapter of his extraordinary life, please drop them below.

Thank you, Geoff. And enjoy the road ahead. taken in Typography & Graphic Communication by @uortypography
