We're thrilled at this week's announcement that the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2026 recognizes the developers of optogenetics. And we are proud to have been the first to apply the technology in medicine, in a landmark 2021 Nature Medicine study. This video explains how the team used the technology to partially restore vision in a blind patient, in a trial led by Dr. José-Alain Sahel, chair of ophthalmology at Pitt and director of the UPMC Vision Institute.

"It is great to see the work of pioneers in the field of optogenetics recognized and to see that the Nobel Committee press release referred explicitly to the clinical demonstration in vision restoration trials," said Sahel. "This encourages us to continue to optimize the implementation of this technology and the next iterations at the core of our efforts." taken in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania by @upmchealthbeat

Come along with a UPMC Health Plan member as she gets her ⭐very first⭐ screening mammogram.

Jenna, who works in marketing at UPMC, decided to attend a local Mamm O'Glam event for her first mammogram experience.

Getting an annual screening mammogram is one of the best things women can do for their health. A little pampering along the way makes it even better.

Mamm O'Glam events are free for members and include an annual screening, a gift bag of freebies, onsite shoulder massages, and manicures. It's a fun, supportive way to prioritize your health. These events are hosted at locations throughout Allegheny County.

Interested in attending? We've got several upcoming Mamm O'Glam events on the calendar:

-Oct. 6 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Washington
-Oct. 23 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Pittsburgh
-Nov. 7 from 7:40 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Monroeville

RSVP for a Mamm O'Glam event by calling 1-877-851-5577 (TTY: 711). Scheduling is available Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

❗️Did you know that many women are called back for additional imaging after their baseline screening mammogram? It's a common part of the process and doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong.

Talk with your doctor about the right mammogram schedule for you, what to expect during your screening, and your health plan benefits. Preventive screenings like mammograms are free for UPMC Health Plan members. by @upmchealthbeat

Measles is a serious and highly contagious illness. It can lead to complications such as pneumonia, diarrhea, and swelling of the brain. While it’s best known for its telltale rash, it attacks the respiratory tract before spreading to other areas of the body. There’s no cure, but outbreaks are preventable. The measles vaccine is a simple, safe, and effective way to prevent measles. A young child with a rash sits indoors on a bed, wearing a white sleeveless shirt. The text above reads, "What are the MEASLES?" by @upmchealthbeat
