We were honored to host NYC Department of City Planning Commissioner Sideya Sherman and NYC Department of Buildings Commissioner Ahmed Tigani last week! These superstar UPP alums spoke effusively about the professional connections they cultivated at Hunter and reflected on their progress so far as heads of their respective agencies.

Moderated by Professor Laura Wolf-Powers, the panelists discussed their deep commitment to contributing to Mayor Mamdani’s affordability agenda and his efforts to involve New Yorkers more directly in city government. They acknowledged challenges to affordability from federal cuts to essential safety net programs, which are already affecting New Yorkers’ housing and food security. U.S. immigration policy is also exerting a chilling effect on the participation of many New Yorkers in civic and political life. Civic engagement strategies have to especially creative in the face of these significant roadblocks.

Many thanks to The Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College, Hunter College Office of Alumni Relations, and event staff at Hunter College for their support with this event as part of Hunter’s “Promoting Civil Discourse and Intellectual Dialogue” series. by @upp_hunter

GUPPA End-of-Summer Picnic!

On September 5th, GUPPA hosted our end-of-summer picnic at the beautiful Prospect Park Boathouse. It was a wonderful afternoon filled with good conversations, new connections, and plenty of opportunities to network and get to know one another outside of the classroom.

The Prospect Park Boathouse was a fitting setting for a group interested in urban planning and public policy. Built in the early 1900s along the Lullwater, the historic boathouse is part of a park that was intentionally designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux as a major piece of Brooklyn’s urban landscape. Today, Prospect Park continues to show how thoughtfully designed public spaces can bring people together.

Most importantly, the picnic was a chance to bring together members from all walks of life. Whether you’re new to GUPPA, a returning member, a current student, or simply interested in connecting with others in the field, all were welcome.

A special thank you to the department who helped make this gathering possible. We truly appreciate your continued support of the GUPPA community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and we hope to see you again at our next GUPPA event!

Students in Hunter’s Master of Urban Planning Online program came from near and far for our first in-person orientation last week!

Over two days, students got to meet their classmates beyond the Zoom screen, put on their planner hats, and explore NYC together—from touring privately owned public spaces (POPs) in Midtown to learning about the history and planning of Central Park and meeting some of the fantastic instructors in the MUP Online program.

A special thanks to Doug McPherson, Nicholas Bloom, and Rafael Bergés for sharing their time and expertise, and to our alumni Grace Walz, Kellan Stanner, Kyle Gorman, Maria Rocha-Buschel, and Nathanael Rotsko for sharing their experiences in the field—and generally making the planning profession sound pretty cool!

Summer at Hunter College UPP means experiential learning!

Students in the Field Study course "Planning & Policy in New York City," taught by Adjunct Lecturer Rafael Bergés, used New York City as their classroom.

Over six weeks, students visited sites across the city to examine how planning, zoning, housing, infrastructure, public space, and development shape the built environment. Through photography, sketches, mapping, and discussion, they used field observation as a planning method, comparing original planning intentions with present-day conditions.

The course culminated in visual analytical work that asked students to turn field documentation and research into evidence-based arguments about how New York City is planned, experienced, and continually reshaped. by @upp_hunter

You can’t understand NYC unless you learn about the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), the public housing system that 1 in 16 New Yorkers call home. The billions in renovations underway through the PACT program and the New York City Public Housing Preservation Trust are rebuilding NYCHA developments for a new generation of families.

Hunter UPP students explored the Eastchester Gardens development, currently undergoing renovations through PACT. Thanks to the development and management team from MDG Design & Construction, Wavecrest Management Team LTD., and Infinite Horizons, LLC, as well as the leaders of the Eastchester Gardens Resident Association, who came out to discuss the progress.

Thanks to students Austin Carvey for the great photos and to Madeline Liberman for coordinating the tour. by @upp_hunter

Despite the fact that theorists probably live in one, homes are rather poorly theorized. Why is this so?

Perhaps it is the ascent of the domestic in capitalist bourgeois culture – the world within a world – that makes them the seat of late modernity’s subjective turn which, in its turn, made home personal, and therefore ungeneralisable. Who knows.

What I do know is that architect, writer and associate professor in the Department of Urban Policy and Planning (@upp_hunter) at @huntercollege, New York, Stefan Al (@stefanal) has written a new book on them, Dwelling on Earth: The Past and Future of the Places We Call Home, published with @w.w.norton on April 14th 2026, and which makes for the subject of this newest episode of the A is for Architecture Podcast.

Dwelling on Earth is a good book beautifully illustrated by David Dugas, spanning two million years, from the caves and huts of our forebears to high-rises to 3D-printed houses of tomorrow

Structured around the four major transformations that we use to describe human history - agriculture, urbanity, industry and now, sustainability, the book poses another meta question, one architects and writers have reflected upon more than somewhat: What is it to dwell?

And, to be precise, is a home different to a house?
