Taking my post-race swollen hobbit foot out for a scenic ride.
Yes, I have paddle shaped feet; yes, they take me to beautiful places; no they don’t help my swimming

Last weekend I raced in a 50km trail race. It was hosted by @upriverrunning in Thunder Bay. I didn’t make my goal of a sub 5 hour finish, but that’s ok and I still feel very happy with the effort. I am especially happy that my knees were only sore during the race and didn’t stay sore long after (the next day the knee pain was gone and only sore muscles remained).
A few take-aways and numbers:
- I only started running a few years ago and used to poke fun at people running (“why would anyone want to do that?!”). And that previously the idea of running a marathon was something I didn’t think was passible for me. Fun to relearn the idea, as an adult, that you never know until you try.
- Distance, 51.78 km; elevation gain, 761m; pace, 6.06/km; moving time, 5:15.
- 7th overall (out of 41 racers) and second in my age group (40-49).
- Learned a lot about my body and what it might take to race longer events in the future.
Thanks to everyone who helped make this event happen, especially everyone with @upriverrunning. And special thanks to Antonio for making me feel welcome to my first (mini) Ultra race. But the biggest thanks goes to Mary and Miali for driving down to surprise me at the finish line! What a treat to see their smiles as I approached the finished line! by @upriverrunning

RACE RECAP

To say this race tested me is an understatement.

I rolled my ankle around 3km, fell down a hill around 24km, and spent most of the race bruised, swollen and beat up. My toes are black from changing my gait to protect the ankle and repeatedly smashing them.

Somehow, 0 to 25km still felt great. The top three stayed together for most of the first loop. I dropped to 4th around 27km, then somewhere around 35km I fell back to 6th.

That was the low point. I was sore, tired and wanted to quit. I even told our aid station guru I was done at 40km.

Then I got there, had a @milkandwatercakeshop cookie, completely forgot to drop, and just kept going.

The final 10km became about breaking the race into pieces. Get out of the Cascades. Get over the next hill. Keep moving. Stop worrying about the finish.

On the last climb both quads started cramping, so I walked. Once I hit the red trail with 2km left, I emptied the tank.

That was probably the biggest lesson from this one. When things go sideways, you don’t need to solve the whole race. Just deal with what’s in front of you and keep moving.

The first loop was about position and learning the course. The second loop was a physical and mental fight.

I wanted top 3 male.

We got it.

Smiling before. Smiling after. And we genuinely wonder, did they actually just run 25/50k or did they go for a walk? We honestly can’t tell by how fresh they‘re looking!

Congratulations everyone, well done 👏🏻 taken in Thunder Bay, Ontario by @upriverrunning
