The Burlington County Prison operated from 1811 to 1965. it was the oldest operating prison in the nation at the time of its closure. The first reports of spirits roaming around the halls was in 1833, following the
execution of Joel Clough, who was buried on the grounds. Guards and prisoners heard
moaning and rattling chains, and smelled cigarette smoke coming from the “dungeon”.
During renovations in the 1990s, workers heard sounds and saw apparitions throughout
the building. This historic prison is a National Historic Landmark and is the oldest continuously used prison in the United States. by @urbanexpl0ring
