POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

There are moments on the From Chicago tour where we actually watch something click in real time.

At Urban Prep Charter Academy for Young Men, it happened when Dion Dawson (@diondawson) told the room he was from Englewood. Plainly, without explanation. Just, I’m from Englewood. A few students sat up a little straighter after that.

Then it happened again during the Q&A. The questions started with Dion’s businesses, but quickly shifted to their own ideas and then how to navigate the world as young Black men.

And when the conversations continued into the hallway after the talk ended, we knew something had stuck.

A room full of Chicago students saw someone who grew up exactly where they did standing at the front of the room. That’s the whole reason Gray Matter exists: to let young people in every neighborhood know that they are capable of building incredible things and becoming incredible people.

Next stop: Michele Clark Academic Preparatory Magnet High School.

A host of men showed up on Aug. 24th, CPS official first day of school, to celebrate the black and brown beautiful young Men of Urban Prep Academy on it’s 3rd Day of attendance showing up Early...which is on time for these brothers. The men stayed and were able to witness the daily ritual of Community and show that they too BELIEVE. Thanks to the Men of Antioch Baptist Church, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Urban Prep Academy Alumni for showing UP. by @urbanprep100

Urban Prep’s NHS members proudly served the community at Sankofa Market! Students worked to pack produce, serve families, and load cars at the food pantry, helping ensure neighbors had access to essential resources. Their dedication, teamwork, and compassion reflect the very best of our school community and the spirit of service we strive to uphold. #givingbacktothecommunity #urbanprep #blackexcellence #chicago #care taken in Chicago, Illinois by @urbanprep100

At Urban Prep Academy, We Believe that students will not fall into the trap of negative stereotypes and low expectations. Instead, We Believe in their potential and ability to exceed so we must “LET ‘EM KNOW” that is the standard. For the 17th year in a row, each graduating class, has achieved 100% college acceptance into a 4yr college/university. As a community, it remains our responsibility to lead, support, and guide our Black and Brown brothers towards a future that warrants success through opportunity and exposure. Today, we “LET ‘EM KNOW” We are Exceptional, Not because we say it but because we work hard at it. #webelieve #urbanprep #blackexcellence #letemknow #education taken in Richard J.
