We are our ancestors wildest dreams. Today we celebrate a part of us that was stripped away & weaponized.

Our ancestors experienced
Forced Shaving: Upon capture and arrival at ports, enslavers frequently shaved the heads of African men and women. This was a deliberate act to strip them of their identity, culture, and humanity from the very start

Dehumanizing Language: Enslavers used animalistic terms to describe Afro-textured hair. They referred to it as "wool" or "fur" rather than human hair, creating a psychological hierarchy that placed Black people below whites

Concealment Laws: In places like Louisiana, the Tignon Laws of 1786 legally mandated that Black and Creole women wear a scarf or wrap (tignon) over their hair. This law was designed to suppress their beauty and mark them as an underclass because their elaborate hairstyles were attracting white men and outshining white women

Locs have always been more than just a hairstyle to me.. they represent history, identity, culture and connection🪄🪞🇯🇲

As a Jamaican woman who grew up in a Rastafarian family, locs have always been a part of me. I just never imagined that one day I would be known as a loctician, helping others begin and maintain their own loc journeys.

Fun fact: The oldest set of locs I’ve started in 2009 is now 17 years old! 🌱 I remember using only a bobbypin 😅

I’m currently working on a loc workshop. Whether you’re interested in learning about the history and cultural significance of locs, mastering the techniques, or starting your very own loc journey, this workshop is for you.
