NEWBURGH, NY — NFA West senior Cameron Ford honored the people who helped shape his journey during an inspirational senior presentation focused on family, mentorship, leadership, and community.

Throughout the presentation, Ford reflected on his experiences as a student, athlete, mentor, and community advocate. He credited teachers, advisors, coaches, family members, and friends for helping him overcome challenges and reach important milestones during his high school years.

Ford highlighted his involvement in organizations including My Brother’s Keeper, the Black History Club, and track and field, while also discussing internship opportunities that allowed him to gain experience in education, healthcare, and public service. One of those opportunities allowed him to strengthen a community partnership with the City of Newburgh Fire Department and the American Red Cross aimed at improving fire safety awareness and access to smoke alarms for local residents.

A major theme of his presentation was the importance of community support. Ford shared how mentors and positive role models helped guide him and encouraged younger students to take advantage of opportunities available to them.

He concluded by thanking those who supported him throughout his journey and encouraging others to invest in their communities, believe in themselves, and strive for excellence. “A child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth,” Ford said while reflecting on the impact his community has had on his life.

As he prepares to attend Morehouse College, Ford said he plans to continue building on the lessons he learned at NFA West while pursuing future opportunities in leadership and service.

ATLANTA, GA — Media personality and commentator Quentin Latham, better known as Funky Dineva, returned to his platform this week after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer and used his comeback show to deliver a powerful message about health awareness in the Black community.

During the emotional broadcast, Latham revealed that he had no symptoms before learning he had prostate cancer. According to him, doctors discovered the issue after routine blood work showed elevated PSA levels.

He stressed that many men avoid screenings because of fear, embarrassment, or misinformation, but explained that prostate cancer can often be detected early through a simple blood test.

“You can’t protect and provide for your family from the grave,” Latham said during the show while encouraging Black men to stop waiting until they feel pain before going to the doctor.

His story reflects a larger health issue impacting Black men across the United States.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Black men are more likely to develop prostate cancer than any other racial or ethnic group and are more than twice as likely to die from the disease.

The American Cancer Society reports that Black men have a 67% higher prostate cancer incidence rate compared to white men.

Meanwhile, ZERO Prostate Cancer states that approximately one in six Black men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime.

Health experts continue to stress the importance of early screenings because prostate cancer often develops silently without symptoms during its early stages.

Latham said catching the cancer early allowed him to recover quickly and return to work within days of surgery. He also revealed that he now plans to undergo yearly scans and routine testing because of his family history with cancer.

Throughout the show, he encouraged women to share his story with the men in their lives, hoping it motivates more Black men to prioritize preventative care and regular checkups. by @urbanupdatez

NEWBURGH, N.Y. — A tractor-trailer became stuck while attempting to make its way down Overlook Place after the driver tried to navigate the narrow street despite parked cars lining the roadway.

The truck was unable to make it through and remained stuck until nearby residents moved their parked vehicles, giving the driver enough room to continue.

Fortunately, no one was injured, and no buildings, vehicles, or other property were damaged. The incident was not considered an accident, but it temporarily blocked the street while the truck was maneuvered free.

The situation drew the attention of neighbors before traffic resumed once the parked cars were moved.

A professor has gone viral after claiming 32 of his 35 students failed a portion of a midterm exam after using artificial intelligence to complete the assignment without proofreading the results.

In a TikTok video, the professor explained that the discussion post was part of his students’ midterm. At first glance, the assignment appeared completely normal. However, he had secretly embedded the word “Madagascar” in white-colored text, making it invisible unless the text was copied and pasted.

According to the professor, the hidden word had nothing to do with the Industrial Revolution, the topic students were asked to discuss. He said the hidden text was designed to identify students who copied the entire prompt into an AI chatbot instead of writing their own response.

The professor said many students apparently pasted the assignment directly into AI, then copied the generated response into their submissions without reviewing it. As a result, the unrelated word “Madagascar” appeared throughout dozens of responses in strange and nonsensical ways.

“Madagascar has nothing to do with the Industrial Revolution,” the professor said. “It was more than obvious that they didn’t even go back and reread these responses.”

He said the unusual references immediately revealed which students had relied entirely on AI to complete the assignment. According to the professor, 32 of the 35 students across two classes failed that portion of the midterm.

The video has since sparked widespread discussion on social media about the growing use of AI in education. While many praised the professor’s creative method for detecting AI-generated work, others debated whether hidden prompts are an appropriate way to identify misuse. The incident has also fueled broader conversations about responsible AI use and the importance of reviewing AI-generated content before submitting it.

NEWBURGH, N.Y. — Newburgh is preparing for five days of creativity, entertainment, education, and community engagement as MVOREWEEK 2026 returns for its fourth annual celebration from July 29 through August 2.

Hosted by MVORE Entertainment & Arts, MVOREWEEK is an annual event designed to bring together artists, entrepreneurs, educators, local businesses, and community members through a series of experiences that celebrate music, arts, culture, and service.

This year’s lineup features live performances, educational workshops, networking opportunities, community outreach initiatives, a live podcast, and family-friendly events throughout the City of Newburgh.

The week begins on Wednesday, July 29, with Q&UPDATEZ streaming live at noon on Urban Updatez, followed by a free Karaoke Night at GOAT Newburgh.

On Thursday, July 30, attendees can participate in an Acting Class, Hip Hop Workshop, and Open Mic & Artist Showcase, providing opportunities for both learning and performance.

The celebration continues on Friday, July 31, with the Gospel Unplugged Concert, featuring an evening of live gospel music.

Saturday, August 1, includes the Ladies Vibez Brunch (Live Podcast) before volunteers gather later that evening for MVORECARES – Feeding the Streets, an initiative focused on serving members of the community.

The week concludes on Sunday, August 2, with the season premiere of FAITH TALKS on Urban Updatez, followed by Vibes & Vendors, a free community event featuring live music, local vendors, and entertainment at the Holland Tunnel Revisited Cultural Center.

Organizers say MVOREWEEK continues to grow each year with the goal of creating opportunities for artists, supporting local businesses, inspiring young creatives, and strengthening the Newburgh community.

Madison, Wisconsin — Demonstrators gathered on Willy Street in Madison after a man was fatally shot by police Wednesday afternoon, prompting calls for justice and increased police accountability.

According to the Madison Police Department, officers responded to reports of a person checking vehicle door handles in the area. During the encounter, officers shot the man, who was later pronounced dead. Gatlinburg, Tennessee — Visitors in downtown Gatlinburg got an unexpected wildlife sighting after a black bear was seen casually walking through a busy parking lot filled with cars and tourists.

Video circulating on social media shows the bear strolling through the lot as people kept their distance and watched from nearby. No injuries or confrontations were reported.

Black bear sightings are common in Gatlinburg and the surrounding Great Smoky Mountains area. Wildlife officials remind residents and visitors to never approach or feed bears and to give them plenty of space if encountered.
