Slip leads are all I've used for a good ten years now, and @mountaindogproducts leashes have reigned supreme for a while. I like being able to have a variety of lengths. Dogs can't slip or sneak out of them like they can on a harness or flat collar. For those of you that have enjoyed seeing Katie the Chi, this is what she started as. Massively overweight, zero life experience, she never went on a walk or met another person. She peed and pooped inside, and spent her entire day sitting on a lap, barking at any unfamiliar sound, and eating garbage food. You never fully know the degree to which a dog can be rehabilitated with so little life experience, but I rarely expect THIS degree of success. She walks beautifully, she's playful and fun and sweet and will occasionally sass my big dogs around which I LOVE to see a small dog do. It really highlights her confidence levels. I couldnt be more proud of her, and now I understand why people fall in love with the breed. She has a great lil personality, and is gentle and tender, yet goofy and playful. Big hats off to her. The only way out of a situation like that is straight through. She had to face her fears and work through them. Never, under any circumstances would I greet a dog in the way that I see MOST people greet dogs MOST of the time. Now, I'm aware this post probably isn't going to change anyone's mind, we just kinda do what we've always been doing. BUT, on the off chance you want to learn how to meet a dog in the most sense-making way possible to THEM, your personal preferences aside, then approach at a 45, straight on is ok, too, with calm and gentle energy while avoiding eye contact, turn your side to them, and see if they want to smell you. If not, they don't wanna say hi 🤷‍♂️ That is LETTING, the start of this reel is MAKING them smell. Now, I'm no fool, I'm aware that some dogs don't give a shit. I know that. For them the rules don't matter. I hope that one day, we come back to at least considering what people with a lot more experience than us do in similar situations. I have met thousands upon thousands of dogs, and this is what we call a 'best practice.' If you want any clarification, don't hesitate to holler. I'm an open book.

Trauma porn and victim narratives have no place in dog culture. Dogs are resilient. Dogs they can always improve. Nothing needs to have ever happened to a timid, nervous, anxious, insecure dog to be that way. Sometimes it's just genetics, sometimes they were neglected and experienced very little during their formative times. Just because that wasn't our FAULT, it's still our RESPONSIBILITY to usher them through any challenges, and show them how to be the best dog they can be. Generally speaking, doting on them with ceaseless affection is NOT the through-line to that host of symptoms. Exercise, clarity, communication, patience, follow through, play, and not forcing or rushing the connection are your best friends. They don't see you as their saviors. They never will. That's not how they think. A relationship is BUIlLT, and it's built on a foundation of sense making meeting their needs. Some dogs don't want your affection. ALL dogs need exercise. To treat a dog like victim is the ULTIMATE DISRESPECT. To do so in order to seem virtuous or to act as savior-to-dogs is selfish. Yes, they need us. But they need us to treat them in the way that makes sense and builds their skills, resiliency, and abilities. Thank Dog there are people out there that do that. Find one, stay close, and never let go. We, dogs included, will all be better for it. If you want to tell me that yes, some dogs have suffered and have been traumatized for that reason, save it, I know that. Rehabilitating dogs is my job. I am aware. Athena nailed it. You never really know when, if, or how quickly a dog will come around. That's part of the fun and mystery of all this. Even in the best and most ideal circumstances, with all the right decisions, it takes the time it takes. Sometimes I am pleasantly surprised, and some things take months for a dog to really understand. Athena CLEARLY enjoys the company of dogs, but had some misconceptions or at least, some sub-optimal associations. Since this vid she has attempted to initiate play with a few dogs, and is downright comfortable back there. Beautiful to see. Cauliflower is a shy dog but once you are friends she’s your bestie. she LOVES cats and dogs. needs to live with a dog and will absolutely wrestle with your cat if your cat enjoys that 🤣

These folks have already spent thousands on vet bills, out of THEIR OWN POCKETS. They're covered in bruises. Both dogs sustained injuries in the recent fight, and the only thing I'm surprised about is that it wasn't worse. Not ANY dog can just go into ANY home. This was one of the strongest dogs I've ever felt on leash, and wasn't afraid to use it. And these people just wanted to help. How they got these two dogs apart is beyond me. By minimizing the problems and presenting a dog as something other than what they are, folks are being put in absurd, dangerous, and irresponsible situations. Thankfully we could get in there and talk some common sense. Through places and people like @apurposefulrescue @bulliesandbuddies @starpackrescue @hellosouthladogs , a more suitable dog can be found.
This type of stuff is happening all over the place. This dog was, and would continue to, ruin these peoples' lives. The whole house divided in half. 77 year old retirees. Sad state of affairs. They will shortly be able to realize just how hyper vigilant they had to become, and peace and harmony will be restored.
