For those who don't know about "Mughal-e-Azam" let me introduce you to a piece of Indian cinema history.

Released in 1960, Mughal-e-Azam was made on an enormous scale for its time. It took years to bring to the screen, with elaborate sets, costumes and production that pushed the limits of Hindi cinema.

And when it finally arrived in theatres, it wasn't simply another movie.

People reportedly waited for hours — even spending nights outside theatres just to get their hands on tickets.

I grew up hearing stories like this from my grandmother. Stories of people literally laying mattresses outside cinemas, waiting for the opportunity to watch this film.

Long before the word "Bollywood" became the global name for Hindi cinema, films like Mughal-e-Azam were helping define what Indian cinema could be.

And at the centre of it all was Madhubala as Anarkali — a performance and image that became immortal.

This artwork is my tribute to her, and to a film that became much bigger than a movie.

Madhubala as Anarkali in [Mughal-e-Azam] (1960).

Swipe through to see the artwork.
