Two years ago, my mom pushed me to get out of a life I didn't deserve to be stuck in. She fought an entire bloodline to make sure I never had to settle just because I was a woman.

Today, I'm just trying to become everything she wants me to be. More educated, more independent, more free than the women before me ever got to be.

I hope every woman gets to be overeducated, financially independent, and free enough to build a life her mother could only dream of.

I grieve every day.

I grieve a face I can still see clearly, even though I've started losing everyone else. I forgot how my parents used to sound like.I don't remember my childhood, like someone took an eraser to it while I wasn't looking. But him, I still have him. I still have the sound of him.

I kept this one clip on my phone like it's oxygen. Not because I listen to it every day. Because I need to know it's there. Because someday my brother's voice might join the others in the fog, and I am not ready to lose the one person whose voice kept me on this side of the world.

He was there on the nights I couldn't breathe. Just there looking at me like giving up wasn't an option he was willing to let me choose. I tried anyway. More times than I've told anyone. And every single time, his face is what pulled me back from the edge of it.

I told him I'd come home. I told him I'd give him the kind of life he deserved the one he spent giving to me for free. That was the promise. That was the whole plan.

I'm still here. Not home. Here in a city that doesn't know my name outside of a job title, doing the only thing that keeps the days from collapsing in on themselves: wake, work, walk, eat, sleep. Repeat. I chose this distance. I chose to be far from the people I love, thinking distance was the price of becoming someone worth coming home to.

I am lonely. I don't know when that stops being true.

But I haven't broken the promise. I've only postponed it. And every time I play this clip, I'm not just remembering a voice I'm renewing a vow. To come back. To become the person he already believed I was, back when I didn't believe it myself.

I will never give up on life. Not because it's easy. Because someone already spent his whole heart making sure I'd still be here to try. by @urjaaasaha

I just hope it’s all worth it in the end. I’ve been shifting cities, leaving places, packing my life into bags, and starting over again and again. Every time, hoping this time I’ll finally find some stability, some peace, somewhere that feels like home.

Maybe someday I’ll look back at all these goodbyes and understand why I had to keep starting over. For now, I’m just hoping it all means something. 🤍
