I’m so drawn to this image because it captures an ecosystem — or at least that’s how I like to look at it. From cars driving past, to people walking/running/biking, to tourists admiring the Golden Gate Bridge in the background, there’s so much life going on in this photo. So many different reasons for being in that exact moment in time. So many different souls and matter coexisting. So many people whose favorite colors, worst fears, and biggest dreams I won’t ever come to know. I have so much wonder, too. What was that man listening to during his run? How did that piece of trash get there? How often does the biker take this route? How did that couple meet? The questions are never ending.

I don’t usually like photos with elements that are falling out of frame, however, I think this adds to the idea that all of these people and things have their own lives and places that we’ll never be able to truly capture and understand. It’s a good reminder that everything is ever so dynamic.

Max’s room.

I think taking photos of someone’s personal space, whether it’s their room, their coffee table spread, their desk, etc. is always interesting. It’s quite telling of their personality, habits, and preferences. It’s like a little peek into their life, or at least a moment in their life.

In this case, the photo portrays a moment of our lives. Max and I’s belongings meshed. It was an interaction of sorts, if you will. My water bottle next to his. My glasses on his desk. My laptop on his trackpad. My shoes in the corner.

While I wouldn’t consider his room here to be neat, it was a combined entropy that was the product of our occasional cohabitation. And while it wasn’t the most extraordinary space, it was a vessel for conversation, connection, and meaning-making, and to me, that’s extraordinary enough. taken in Trumbull College by @urmomsdigicam

Unicorn spotting?!

They brought these therapy “unicorns” to the Pauli Murray College courtyard last fall, and while they’re super cool and beautiful, I can’t help but think of the possible dark side of the industry. From exploitation and abuse, to overworking and neglect, to commercialization and profit-driven practices, you never really know what’s going on behind closed doors.

I thought this photo was fitting for this theme. With its red eye from the flash, the unicorn looks sinister, plotting a rebellion. I hope this guy is living a decent life, and if that isn’t the case, I hope he runs away lol taken in Pauli Murray College - Yale University by @urmomsdigicam

From the inside the 5th av/53rd st subway station. Are these newsstands even in service anymore? My guess is no, but the concept of them seems so cool. Last summer during my time in NYC, I made an effort to not only photography strangers, but more importantly, to also talk to them. I was such a shy girl growing up, so younger Serena would have been proud, haha. Although I’ve grown into a total extrovert who loves conversing with people, I still found it so daunting to approach a group of strangers and strike up conversation. But every time after I broke the initial barrier and introduced myself or asked them a question, I immediately felt so grateful for the interaction.

I frequently think about all of the shared moments that we have with strangers, yet most times, we carry on about our lives as if these people were nonexistent or just NPCs. Especially in NYC, I always felt a draw towards the people around me on my subway car or the person sitting next to me at the coffee shop. Therefore, one day I decided to start talking to people. If I wanted to compliment someone’s shoes, I forced myself to do it. If I wanted to ask a stranger to play table tennis with me at the park, I forced myself to ask. These connections made me feel so happy. Even though I may never see these people again, I am grateful for the conversations and interactions we shared because at the end of the day, that’s what life is all about. And I think everyone would benefit from talking to strangers more. You can learn and gain so much from even just a 20 second conversation. Human connection is a beautiful thing, and it’s a shame that, nowadays, our society tends to seek it through a phone screen rather than in real life.

Isn’t the composition of this photo so interesting? Something about the layered buildings and railings is so captivating to me. It honestly reminds me of layers in a design file or even a painting.

The railing leads to the art school, while the brick building housed my studio—a space I loved but was too far away from to use as much as I would have liked to. The cream building in the back, a parking garage, represents the studio’s imminent fate. Bringing this account back.

I want to make photography more of a daily and intentional practice in my life. I plan to use this platform to share my work accompanied by my thoughts, be it in the form of a diary entry, observation, or personal account of the moment captured. I’m excited to be back!
