đŸ‡ș🇾 Matt Barnes asked Barack Obama if there was a moment he realized the world saw him as a Black man:

“Growing up in Hawaii was a little different because it’s all mixed up there. There wasn’t a huge black population...

Hawaii is such a mixed up place. First of all, everybody’s mixed up. You got Japanese and you got white folks and you got Hawaiians and you got Chinese. And so there wasn’t as much of the pressure, I think, as if I was living on the mainland.

If I’d been here in Chicago and you go to school and folks sitting in different spots and now you’re trying to figure out how am I navigating this? You didn’t have to deal with that.

One thing my mother, I give her credit for a lot of things, but one thing she always did, she always praised my dad, even though he wasn’t around. She was like, man, that dude was brilliant...

So they gave me a positive image of being black in a way that I happily claimed it. It wasn’t the kind of thing where I was soaking in a lot of negative ideas about that part of me.”

Michael Peña grew up on the south side of Chicago in a traditional Mexican-American community đŸ‡ČđŸ‡œ

“Both my parents worked in factories. My dad worked at Handy Button. My mom worked at Handy Button. I worked at a factory, packaging soap, and then laying down books, and my brother worked in a factory. And we all, that’s how we started...

I grew up in the ghetto. I grew up in Pilsen. And I live right by Douglas Park, and every side there was a gang there.

I had my first bike when I was 13 years old, and my dad bought it. I was so excited. It was me and my cousin. I had it for half an hour.

I got beat up by five dudes, and they’re taking my bike, and they just, it’s not like they were running away. They’re just strolling away.”

Frank Cohn was born in Germany to a Jewish family.

As a young boy, he was forced to flee Nazi persecution and escape the country that had become increasingly dangerous for Jews.

He later became a proud American citizen and returned to Europe as a U.S. Army soldier during World War II, fighting against the Nazi regime he had once escaped.

Proud to be Jewish. Proud to be American. Sharing a remarkable story of courage, resilience, and service.

Adria Arjona on thinking in Spanish while speaking English:

“Spanish is my first language. I think in Spanish, I sometimes find myself translating when I’m speaking English.

So people just look at me like, oh, she’s a little slow. But I’m just like, what’s the word, what’s the word, oh yeah, here you go.”

@TheToast hosts Claudia and Jackie Oshry break down Aaron Rodgers’ wildest claim about his ex-fiancée Shailene Woodley:

“He proposed to Shailene and a week later she asked... she said she had to go fuck someone else.

She said yes when he proposed. A couple days after that she tells me, before we get married, I gotta go f*** this guy.”

What it means to be Hmong:

“I think being Hmong is to resist, really. That’s what I think of being Hmong is to be resilient.

Because when I think of Hmong history, we’ve never had our own country or a homeland that we can really call or claim as our own.

We were first in like Southern China and then we immigrated to Laos and then to Thailand and then to the US.

It’s hard to pin a place, to where we’re from. Everyone asks me, where are you really from? And then I’m like, I’m from California and everyone’s like, where are your parents from? I’m like, they’re from Laos, but they’re not Laotian either.”

Why does Ashkenazi food get a bad rep?

“Gefilte fish has got a really bad rep. Whenever I see videos of people eating it, they buy the jarred stuff that no self-respecting human being should ingest.

It’s gelatinous, it’s gross, it’s dense, don’t do it, don’t eat it...

Gefilte fish is this delicious, delicious, it’s basically a loaf, it’s like ground fish with some carbs, like flour, and it’s really good.”

đŸ‡ș🇾 Craig Robinson on watching his sister Michelle and Barack Obama become the first Black family in the White House:

“It feels like I was holding my breath for eight years.

Because of the magnitude of what they had in front of them and how if they had somehow accidentally or maliciously done the wrong thing, how it would have affected the entire race.

People don’t talk about that.”

Rockstar Riley worked at Waffle House since he was 15 — then got fired for making a viral love letter to it. He told @SnoozyWeiss and @standupdan he has no regrets:

“But honestly, it’s okay.

Because you know what? All that was, was a stepping stone for me to go ahead and do the things that I was really meant to do.

Because even though I’ve been working for Waffle House since I was 15, I’ve been making music since I was eight.”

@LaverneCox on why LGBT acceptance is regressing after a decade of progress:

“We went so many steps ahead in that moment in time.

Whenever there’s progress, the people in power who want to keep that power do everything they can to make sure that this marginalized group does not have access to power.

David Zabar on how one 25-foot smoked fish counter became a New York institution:

“Zabar’s, which grew from a small, like one storefront to about half a city block, really started out as one counter.

It was the appetizing smoked fish counter in a store that was only about 25 feet wide.”

@azizansari tells @TheoVon what growing up Indian in 1980s South Carolina was actually like:

“As soon as I tell people I grew up in South Carolina, they’re always like, oh, it must have been so racist, all this stuff. And of course, there’s moments where it wasn’t nice...

They don’t, people there didn’t even know what Indian people were. They didn’t see them in the culture. They didn’t understand.”
