Drawing Madrid at the Temple of Debod

This week, we worked on linear perspective through direct observation, using pencil to explore horizon lines, vanishing points, proportion, depth, and the relationship between architecture and space.

Our classroom was the Temple of Debod, an ancient Egyptian temple originally built in the 2nd century BCE in Nubia. Threatened by the construction of the Aswan High Dam, it was dismantled and later donated to Spain by Egypt in 1968 in recognition of Spain’s contribution to the international campaign to save the monuments of Nubia.

Reconstructed in Madrid, the temple offered us a particularly interesting subject for studying perspective: repeated architectural forms, strong horizontal and vertical lines, and structures that recede towards vanishing points.

Drawing as a way of learning to look — and Madrid as our classroom. #art #usac taken in Madrid, Spain by @usacmadrid

On today’s class they took a look at historical photographic process and made cyanotypes. Using a historical process allows students to imagine what photography was like before digital cameras. 😮💯👏
