Italy’s National Unity and Armed Forces Day celebrations will take place in Asiago this year, with officials emphasizing that November 4 is not a celebration of war but a tribute to the role of the armed forces in safeguarding peace and national defense. Prefect Filippo Romano highlighted the constitutional duty of defense and the military’s deterrent role. The event continues a project linking Vicenza Province’s Great War memorial sites. Local leaders also hope the occasion will draw attention to the slow restoration of Asiago’s Leiten War Memorial, where more than 54,000 Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers are buried.

🕯 Tomorrow, Nov. 1, Italy celebrates 𝙊𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙞, or All Saints' Day, a national holiday that is a Christian solemnity celebrated to honor all the saints and martyrs of the Church. It has its origins in the Paleo-Christian era, the 4th century AD, and became part of the Catholic and civil calendar thanks to Pope Gregory IV, who in 835 AD asked the Frankish king Louis the Pious to designate it as a feast of obligation on Nov. 1 of each year.
⛪The Church has always celebrated the "𝘎𝘪𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘰 𝘥𝘦𝘪 𝘋𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪" or Day of the Dead after the feast of All Saints, on Nov. 2.
💐 In Italy, traditions include visiting cemeteries, where families go to pay their respects to the deceased by bringing flowers—most notably chrysanthemums—and lighting small memorial candles. There are also various traditional sweets, which differ from one region to another.
