With a deep well of sadness, we at the USDAC are sharing the news that our beloved friend and Co-Director, Brienne Colston, passed away last week. Bri had been battling health challenges for the past several months, and while her recovery journey had been up and down, this is still an absolute shock to all of us. We are heartbroken. Bri was an integral part of the USDAC family. She was a visionary and strategic leader, an unbelievable partnership builder, and someone who could make just about anything happen. But more important is how she made her way through the world. Bri brought sunlight into every room she entered. She was warm, hilarious, generous, and completely herself at all times. When a conversation needed more energy, Bri brought it. When a room needed to laugh, Bri found the joke. When the rest of us were stuck, she had a way of helping us find our way forward. Bri’s impact extends far beyond the USDAC. She built relationships everywhere she went, and so many people came to know her as a collaborator, organizer, friend, mentor, and source of joy. The community she helped build is enormous, and we know that many of you are grieving alongside us. If you’d like to support Bri’s family during this time, please feel free to donate or volunteer for the Meal Train. For now, we are trying to remember what Bri gave us: laughter, connection, generosity, and an incredible capacity to make people feel like they belonged. And if there is someone in your life who shines like Bri shined, please tell them. —Jordan, Kelly, and Carol by @usartsdept
You may have heard that ICE is being deployed to U.S. airports. That’s why we’re re-releasing one of our vital conversations today: Taking Back our Data: Digital Security for Artists & Activists. In this zine, you’ll learn important ways to protect your information and your device. We’ve also made a new Digital Security Travel Checklist as a companion piece to the zine. 🔗 Click the link in our bio or go to tinyurl.com/USDACtravelchecklist We don’t know how this developing situation will impact the likelihood of your device being searched during travel, but it is fair to assume there will be increased risk. We’re back! After taking a break to focus on the #NoICEintheCup campaign, we return to our Vital Conversations series about how arts and culture intersect with current pressing political issues. Vital Conversations #7: The Poetics of Migration, is a special issue featuring three artistic offerings on navigating the physical and emotional journey of migration. We offer this at a moment when migrants are criminalized in the United States at the same time that an increase of people have made plans to leave the United States. The contributors to our issue posit that divination, diagramming, and dreaming are ways that art can help us cross borders. 🔗 in bio by @usartsdept

More work for @noiceinthecup2026 🖤 We refuse to let fear, government control, and submission define our strength. (So I edited this kid’s original smile because we are still pissed:) Ice stayed out of the world cup but they are still in our schools, on our streets, in disguise, and destabilizing our communities. Thank you @usartsdept ✖️✖️Ice out of everywhere!!! Stay vigilant and dont let this moment desensitize you <3 <3 <3 by @usartsdept
DEMOCRACY DEFENSE! Cultural Workers Against Authoritarianism. #Authoritarianism is on the rise globally — AND so is our power to push back. Artists and cultural workers play a pivotal role in successful people-powered movements, shaping what’s possible through story, symbol, and song and moving/inspiring people to courageous action. Built by and for cultural workers, this free training offers insight and connection to meet this moment with strategy, courage, and creativity. Together, we’ll unpack how mass #noncooperation can block #authoritarian power, learn from global #resistance efforts, and imagine how our craft can power collective action. We’ll also take a strategic look at key moments for U.S.-based movement-building in 2026— Bicentennial, #MidtermElections—and consider how artists and cultural organizers can most effectively align with movement priorities. Whatever your creative medium or path, you’re part of a vital cultural frontline. Let’s grow our power, refuse compliance, and make culture that blocks, bridges and builds. This training is co-hosted by Beautiful Trouble and @usartsdept (The session will be in English with Spanish and ASL interpretation) Register: beautifultrouble.org/resist by @usartsdept
The World Cup may be over, but the next chapter is already underway. Throughout the tournament, we commissioned artists across the host cities who used their creativity to galvanize us around a simple but powerful idea: everyone deserves to come together, celebrate, and feel safe, without fear of ICE. We’re deeply grateful to the artists who shared their vision, commitments, and inspiration with us through their work, helping us imagine what it looks like to keep ICE out of our communities. And they’re not stopping there. These new pieces are a reminder that art can move people, build solidarity, and inspire action, and that the work to protect immigrant communities continues long after the final whistle.
