“I’m an engineer but I also love ___”

Pallavi is a first-year Master’s student studying Electrical Engineering, BUT she also loves music! 🎶🎶

She’s gotten to experience firsthand how her passion for music connects with her studies. Not only that, but it’s led her to amazing opportunities like being part of the Trojan Marching Band and even making music for a movie! 🎬🎶

Proof that engineering encompasses every area of life! ✌️ by @usc.bme

From developing the first retinal prosthesis approved to restore partial sight to pioneering an implant designed to restore memory, the Alfred E. Mann Department of Biomedical Engineering has spent five decades turning ambitious ideas into technologies that improve human health. Today, that tradition continues through innovations ranging from advanced cancer therapies to sensor-equipped lollipops that could make diagnostic testing more accessible.

The department marked its 50th anniversary last week, it now looks to the future as a joint department run by USC Viterbi School of Engineering and the Keck School of Medicine of USC.

I first came to USC as Adam the student. Years later, I returned as Professor Bush.

Getting invited back to speak and celebrate 50 years of USC Biomedical Engineering was both surreal and deeply meaningful. I had a chance to reconnect with old friends and mentors, meet new ones, and share a few lessons from the journey.

Grateful for the people and the place that helped shape the scientist, teacher, and person I became.

Happy 50th, USC BME. Fight On! ✌🏾

Scientists just found a hidden map inside the kidney.

At the Keck School of Medicine of USC, researchers mapped a previously unrecognized axis that organizes how a kidney forms, then engineered synthetic organizer cells to recreate that signal inside lab grown organoids.

Led by Nils Lindström, PhD and Leonardo Morsut, PhD, the study, published in the journal Science, produced kidney organoids that are more reproducible and closer to how kidneys actually develop, supporting future research into disease and transplantable tissue.
