The USCG Surf Hui is getting legit!

With a cool design by @bongobay, we now have something that says Coast Guard worth wearing 😉😆😁

DM me if you’re interested. There’s long sleeves, tank tops, hooded jackets, coffee mugs, stickers, shirts of course.

There’s also an updated design that has a C-130, helo and rescue swimmer, a black hull and a 47’ MLB along with what you see in this pic.

Production and ship is usually 10-12 days so spouse/parent/friend get that order in ASAP for your USCG Surf Hui loved one in time for Xmas! by @uscg_surf_hui

TRISTEN SIMON
Airmen (AN/E-3)

Not often does an E-3 get spotlighted, but when someone that joins the Coast Guard pulls into barrels like Tristen does, it’s a must you know this guy👀🏄🏼‍♂️🌊

Tristen @tristen_tdawg_simon is from Oxnard, California which is near one of the best waves on the West Coast of the mainland which so happens to be on a military base where the Coast Guard has a “Forward Operating Base”… He grew up seeing 65s flyby his local surf spots all the time; sometimes they’d throw a Shaka out the door doing a low flyby/surf check when he was surfing which was his first thought that would be an epic job.

Being a born & bred watermen and barrel hunting type surfer growing up near Naval Base Pt Mugu, he got a job as a base pool lifeguard when he was about 18 and then started bartending at VC Naval Base when he turned 21 (to make 💰 but also for that priceless base pass😛). Being a lifeguard and a bartender on base and the fact that ASTs use the pool to stay in top shape and ASTs are thirsty individuals who love their job, he was able to get some good insight on what the real job was like from the guy’s who threw him shakas when he was out in the water.
Hearing their stories at the bar and seeing them train at the pool really sparked a flame for Tristen to join and try to get amongst the action/lifestyle.

B/c COVID virtually shut down bars and pools, Tristen took the leap in May 2021 shipping out to Cape May and he is now at AIRSTA SACRAMENTO in his non-rate tour, part of the Annex program on a focus track to becoming an AST (unfortunately the program is not allowing new recruits😒).

Sacramento is pretty far from surf so he’s mostly been a weekend warrior/surf trip surfer for the past 1.5 years but it has allowed him to focus on the intense training he is about to endure at AST A school. He is 46th on the A school list for AST which means he’s pretty close to getting the opportunity to fulfill his goal of becoming an AST. Super stoked on this brada. I hope he kicks okole at AST A School and gets stationed some place where he can get back to pulling into stand-up barrels on the reg & save some lives🤞💪🏾.

DUKE KAHANAMOKU
Commodore (USCG Reserves/Auxiliary)
Yes, we are talking about Duke Kahanamoku: Hawaii’s greatest athlete, a film star and the father of international surfing symbol of Hawaii.
Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku served in the Coast Guard as a Temporary Reserve for the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II (1939-1945). Duke as you all know is known as the father of modern surfing, popularizing the sport in the early 1900’s. He was a true waterman as he was a surfer, Olympic swimmer, and lifeguard. He even helped rescue the lives of 12 people from a 40-foot fishing boat off the California coast in 1925. He kept his ties to the Coast Guard after WWII and in 1966, he was appointed Honorary District Commodore of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary in Hawaii. This to me highlights what a profound connection Coast Guard has to surfing where the father and human symbol of surfing chose the US Coast Guard to serve this nation. Duke would be 129 years old today. It’s awesome @dukeoceanfest and the Duke restaurants managed by TS restaurants continue to keep his legacy alive today.

An amazing turn out for the 2 year anniversary memorial paddle-out for AST1 Phoenix Hanna, to honor and remember a fellow Coastie, hero and one of our military surf tribe members.

He would’ve been stoked on the great weather, waves and company that attended, and stoked to see all the lives he touched and lasting impressions he made, in and out of the water.

MEMORIAL DAY is a federal holiday in the United States dedicated to honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the Armed Forces.

In the Coast Guard, we don’t have too many throughout our history who died while serving. But unfortunately, and fairly recently we did 😔. Someone very much part of our Coast Guard surf community.

Aviation Survival Technician Tyler Jaggers was on a search and rescue case off the Pacific Northwest coast for an individual on a boat who needed to be MEDEVAC to shore. Something went wrong during the medevac, and Tyler suffered injuries that eventually took his life. The Coast Guard has done thousands of these types of rescue missions, but our crews usually come back home safe. Unfortunately, this one took the life of one of our best.

This memorial day and for the rest of the Coast Guard existence, we will always remember and honor Tyler. We miss you Tyler and we will never forget you. We hope you’re trading & sharing waves with Phoenix or together paddling the best channel in the afterlife. Aloha 🫡

Mission Accomplished: Joint service (NAVY and USCG) community service event, fitness challenge and beach day was a success!
- 15 large bags of trash were picked up. (Earth day)
- Teams of 4 competed for fitness dominance and trophies. (Health and wellbeing)
- Surfing and surfing lessons all day. (Health, wellbeing, and stoke)
- Camaraderie between military branches. (Morale and Aloha)

A huge thank you to @huntington_beach_fire @huntington_beach_lifeguards and @cityofhb for all the unwavering support.

SURFING WITH FRIENDS: As a Coast Guard member, I know how hard it is to be away from home and find people to share your passions with. In my 14 yrs of active duty, I’ve had my fair share of solo surfs bc either I didn’t know anyone else that surfed who lived in the area or couldn’t line up schedules with the ones that did surf. But when you find friends in the Coast Guard who share your love for the waves & you link up to surf, it makes all the difference in a fun surf & a memorable surf. And most of my favorite surfs happened when I was scoring waves with my friends 😁

LTJG Cassie Thompson’s story of surfing with fellow officers LT Kayla Ishida & LT Kali Carmine in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 a few weeks ago inspired me to write this. Finding surf buddies in the service is like finding treasure. I’m sure later in life (when they’re all O-6s & Admirals running the CG 😉) they’ll reminisce of their time in 🇵🇷 & cherish these moments.

I intended to post this on international women’s day, but writing my OER & fun surf at the time postponed it a bit 😛.

Super stoked to see more CG wahines surfing 🏄‍♀️ 🤙🏾💪🏾🙌🏽
